Diane Abbott says she’s barred from standing

It's an absolute shambles. Incredible to think how she has been treated. She'd walk it if she was to run as an independent, but can't blame if she doesn't and decides to put her feet up. She at least deserves some rest and a peaceful retirement after the vile racism /abuse she has had to endure through her career.

A relic of the Labour Party leadership that was largly responsible for this current Tory disaster.
The LP need to do everything possible to make sure we don't get another 4 horrific blue years.
If that means dropping loose cannons Corbyn and Abbott so be it.

If it's a question of race, then why is David Lammy shadow foreign secretary?

Diane was rightly suspended. Who in their right mind would claim that jews, the Irish and travellers weren't subject to racism throughout their lives? I have a lot of respect for Diane in her breaking the glass ceiling becoming the first black female MP, and her public service getting elected at every GE with huge majorities and evidently being a good local MP. The fact that she is the most abused MP, and still carries out her role as a public servant shows thick skin and I doubt many people would be able to tolerate what she has endured.

Nonetheless, she has tarnished Labour on several occasions. On a weekly basis, through shows like This Week, she would undermine her own government. She was completely hopeless as a shadow minister. The Nick Ferrari incident was not even a difficult question to answer, and the very basics of knowing your brief completely escaped her. I also feel deeply uncomfortable with comments she made over the years, for instance, claiming Chairman Mao did more good than harm. Excuse me? A man that murdered tens of millions of his own people through a famine and political purges, destroying an entire nation's culture which will never be recovered, that Mao? Or when asserted that black mothers care about their children more than their white counterparts, and when pressed on the rationale, refused to even explain why.

That said, Labour have hardly dealt with this issue in good faith. You cannot just hide behind the NEC process argument. I also find it a bit rich that Tories are now queuing up to defend her and have a dig at Starmer when they were deafly silent with Frank Hester's comments about the woman just a few months ago. I hope she either stands as an independent if she wants to continue, or keeps the Labour whip and plays a role in the House of Lords. These conspiracies that the party is racist, a joke of a comment, just look at the demographics during PMQs, or there is some purging Labour's left, are simply for the birds.

SE4 I believe she wants to resign as a Labour mp, proudly going out carrying the badge of the party she has served all her political career

Barred from standing as a labour candidate at the GE, even Sky asking if it doesn’t stink of racism and asking what the Elphicke women has that she doesn’t?

Oh dear
She a trouble causer though isn't she ?
Anti semite bitter hard left clown.....

Labour apparently had an 'agreement' with the 70+ year old....that they would allow her back into the party as long as she stood aside in this election and let Labour move on from her.....but no, her massive EGO steps up again doesn't it.

I'm centre left thinking but really cannot stand this woman and her 'show'

I’m so sorry to those pointing out that the rabid right winger Elphicke isn’t standing, I mixed up my points Diane Abbott was only given back the labour whip (oh the irony) yesterday

Come on. You can't go round posting well thought out balanced opinions on politics threads round here.

Agree with all that. She's an impressive individual but I can't help but dislike her for some of the things she's come out with over the years. Quite a fascinating character really and she'd be an asset as an MP but shouldn't have been anywhere near a shadow cabinet position (although plenty of others you can say the same of from both parties over the years).
