Dele Alli Interview

On a side point, having been on the inside of professional football clubs, it's alarming to see how club doctors seem to prescribe/administer prescription drugs with little though to player welfare. Sleeping pills are handed out like smarties, majority of players complain of not been able to sleep after night games, adrenalin pumping, so docs just prescribe sleeping pills and tell them only to use after night games. I'm not surprised players are abusing them, particularly when dealing with other issues in their personal lives effecting them. Sure there are plenty of good club doctors who consider players welfare, but needs more regulation imho

I'm really behind Dele and would love to see regain the form he once had. But again as Isaiah said, we really should give these players a bit of a break when they have a dip in form as we really don't have any idea what they are dealing with.

Dele has had horrendous abuse on twitter over the years.

That was a tough watch, respect to him for opening up in a world where feelings were something players felt had to be kept locked away or you were seen as weak. Hopefully he receives the care and support he needs moving forward and he regains his mojo for the game.

Football culture, well actually just culture generally on views of the world, on how the world should operate, is rapidly changing for the better too, thanks to younger generations, they understand far more of the rights and wrongs and are proactive in speaking out, more so than mine and other generations were prepared to acknowledge, It gives me some hope for the future of mankind.
expectations will be riding high after that six weeks rehab.. fans.. the press etc.. he will always be that £100m player.. it's a lot to unpack.. might never be the same player

I would like to see him at Boro.. with Carrick.. and Barkley eh!

the famous story with gazza and merson..doesnt sound like its a new thing.. similar vulnerable players too

Yep. Probably all for the cameras. DA does say that he apologised which doesn't make it any better but I thought he was gracious and wasn't tempted to rip into JM
It shows that some people treat their staff as commodities, little empathy and respect. It isnt in football but in all walks of life.

It’s why I don’t accept the dinosaur managers in football or the “tough but fair” managers in industry. You get more out of people if you treat them with empathy and respect. It’s why I defend Southgate, because he shows a duty of care to his staff, same with Carrick. Players will always respect that more and desire to stay and be successful because they know the alternative is an environment where you might get treated badly. It’s why I don’t get on so much with Warnock or Pulis as people who throw people under a bus to protect their own image are toxic.

so true!!! Many people would have formed an opinion about DA based on that Amazon programme and it just wasn't true. As Neville say's "You definitely were not Lazy"

I think the fair critiscism at the time was that he wasn't making the right decisions in games, he wasn't sharp in his thoughts and actions, the game was regularly passing him by....we now know the root cause of why that happened.

Most clubs have a club doctor, but maybe it's time for a proper qualified resident club psychologist to be the norm at the top end of the game. Not a sports psychologist, a club welfare officer or an Eileen Drury, but someone who can provide a safe space for players to discuss the pressures of the game, the way they deal with leaving work and going back home, achieving happiness and a way of discussing drug, alcohol and other addictions and industry problems.

Clubs at the top end spending 80k/year on this will safeguard the futures of 10s of millions worth of talent. So it makes sense financially, but more importantly it'll save the ruination of careers and lives.

What an incredible interview. Genuinely captivating. So hope he gets back ,would love to see him in an England shirt again.

Just goes to show you never know what's really going on. There has been lots of posts all over message boards in the last couple of years saying how he is a party boy, he doesn't care and how he had too much money too young.
People away from his close circle know nothing and should stay quiet.

I found that incredibly difficult to watch....parts are a bit too close to home for me and my issues. Incredibly brave thing to talk about publically. However I have read that his hand was forced as certain areas of the media had heard he'd been in rehab which, if true (and I'm quite happy to believe it is true) find completely disgusting.

Always been a huge fan of Dele on and off the pitch (someone cleverer than me can search my post history) and to be honest for a few years have thought there was a mental health aspect to his situation.

Brilliant player, captain at the age of 18, maybe the best player in the Premier League at the age of 20, edgy and unpredictable. Gary Neville says he reminded him of Bryan Robson and I see that.

Now, just hope the lad’s alright. And hope he can find some sustainable happiness because you don’t just snap out of that stuff after a six week rehab. Tabloids are F***ing disgusting. It’s way too soon to make a young, vulnerable lad have to face the cameras and talk about this stuff.

It was an incredible interview and I'm glad he has spoken out and told the world what he was going through as it can't of been easy. From what I've heard from a person who works at Spurs DA was surrounded by people who were taking advantage of him and his status, he went a bit off the rails and wasn't interested in football, lets hope he has got rid of these so called friends and gets his passion back for football. He is only 27 so has a good few years ahead of him. I for one would love to see him playing well again and you never know it could be in a boro shirt.

six weeks rehab
6 weeks to deal with all of this is nothing. I was in for over 5 weeks nearly 3 years ago, I still struggle but getting better.

This was a brilliant interview and just shows talent and money cannot stop the demons.

agree about the close to home stuff, but I take so much strength to hear a young lad like this. Open, raw and honest.

Much of what he said regarding drugs is all that you probably need to know about today’s 20/40s generation. Sleeping aids in general you’d have to say for many westerners is at epidemic levels, as is weight loss and many other drugs which are considered OTC, but were prescribed not too long ago. Drug company’s making billions out of humans inability to fight common sense problems on their own or possibly with non addictive / herbal medicines.
