Dale Stephen’s training with us

Players like Stephens have to come in and earn their full-time contract. If we’d paid £2m and signed him for two or three years you’d wonder what they were doing, but coming up to try and win a contract is really positive and shows the player in a good light. If he’s not up to it then we move on and he tries his luck somewhere else.

If him or Luongo could have the same sort of short-term impact Taylor had last season and get us through to the January window, then we can’t lose IMO.

the lack of football over the last two years could mean he is not absolutely paggerd!! Providing he is fit he will be a very good, low cost, low risk, squad payer signing in the Peltier/Bamba ilk.

No problem him coming in if Wilder thinks he adds something to the squad, the deeper the cover the better.

I don't mind this idea as cover, and if he ends up good enough to be getting a game, then even better.

We need two CM subs on the bench, to keep Paddy as an option where he is, and McGree at 10, if we still want to do that, previous games we've had 0 midfield subs on the bench, which has been killing us.

He'd probably do a much better job than McNair in there anyway, so if we go for him, then I'm happy.

Always looked decent whenever I've seen him but the Burnley fans aren't very complimentary about him in the replies.

I wouldn't be surprised if Wilder had let the club know that he was really disappointed that we didn't manage to bring in two midfielders, and pushed for the club to look at free agents.

If Stephens can prove himself in training then he will be a sensible signing on a short-term basis.

We shouldn't have put ourselves in this position.Letting Payero go without a replacement.
I wish folk would stop saying Payero needed replacing. He didn't play and when he did he either got injured or failed to impress (bar Cardiff away).

He genuinely gets 'better' with every passing week in some people's eyes. I'd expect Massimo or Stephens to actually make more appearances than him and they cost nothing 😂

He didn't need replacing. Just like when people say Wood/Coulson/Hall and Uche did. They simply didn't as never played.

Excellent player 2 years ago and it hasn't worked out for him at Burnley, sometimes these things happen, there's very little downside to having a look and if Wilder thinks he can provide cover in a midfield area where we are short of numbers at present and liable to suspensions in the future then there's very little downside in a short term contract to show his worth.

Has had a couple of promotions under his belt and always came across as a talker and organiser on the pitch which is all good for me, I can see where he'd fit in and what he'd give us in terms of offering us a further deep lying midfield option, he has been training with Brighton so shouldn't be too short of fitness and signing him makes a lot of common sense given what's available and what we need.

Payero didn't play much but he was our cover in the 2nd half of the season. He got injured so Tav, Howson and Crooks played 90 mins of every game. We needed to replace the cover be was supposed to provide.

Think stephens and luongo are still good players just not gonna be over 40 game season. Need to pick and choose wisely the games and im sure their experience will be useful.

They are the same age (33), hope Stephens hasn't deteriorated as much as Adam Clayton has in the last 2 years
If he has, it would be a disaster of a signing. He's at Donny now I think. Not sure if he's still getting a game or not.
