Dale Stephen’s training with us

I'd have gone for Tom Rogic if we were looking for another midfielder, he would have added nicely to our Ozzie contingent, although not quite the same type of player as Stephens. Pity he's signed for West Brom now.

Was a good player if he’s fully recovered it’s a no brainer and adds some much needed bite and leadership.

Aye… I’m not that thrilled about this.

I think we needed the short term midfield cover that Luongo brings. Two of them makes me worry that we’re filling squad spots on the quiet out of the window and hoping one of the gambles comes off, which is worrying as we’re supposed to have a recruitment strategy now.

Our midfield’s already full of average grafters, how many more slightly worse Howsons do we need?

By January I’d hope if we’re serious about it we should have two new, dynamic, expensive first team midfielders.

Or we could have just played Payero.

The difference between Clayton and Stephens is that Stephens has played over 100 PL games since that promotion game where as Clayts dropped off quite drastically, failed at Birmingham and got relegated with Doncaster.

Luongo is only on a contract until January, if he doesn't work out then he's gone at a time when we can immediately replace him.

I assume Stephens will be the same.

People saying what a poor summer recruitment we've had. We've filled every position we wanted to except for one or possibly 2 centre mids. Looks like we're doing this by giving 2 experienced free agents a short term contract. Is the moaning just because they're free agents? Would they have been happier if we did exactly the same business except Luongo and Stephens were loan signings from Wednesday and Burnley?

We had a massive rebuild on and we've done pretty well. My concern is not that we've filled back-up spaces with free agents, it's that I think we're really close to a very good squad but if we don't go up this year we'll struggle to replace Giles and Muniz with equal quality next year. I really wish these 2 were permanent.

Only allowed 5 loan players on any given 18 man match day squad... Steffen..Giles...Mowatt..Luongo... Muniz.. so if we sign Stephens, and all are fit to play we cannot select them all..

He's a free agent, not a loan.

Luongo is our player too, not a loan.
He's just on a short-term contract.

I love it me, armchair supporters slagging off a potential signing who has played over 100 times in the Premier League over the last 4 seasons as not being good enough

🤡🤡🤡
The same people who will have slagged off Taylor and Watmore and Pelts and Bamba.........

All good free agents who did a job whilst costing the club very very little

Can’t beat experience and not forgetting Lenihan’s injury added to Fry’s vulnerability this could be an added insurance on that happening. I sometimes wonder why we let Nathan Wood go— for me he was good enough and now we see him actually starting and may I say looking the part.

We’ve done pretty well, agree, but I’m moaning because we’re still so short of quality and depth in the middle that we’re bringing in two guys who’ve barely played in 2 years, on a gamble to see if we can get away with signing one of them on a longer deal. They’re free agents for a reason.

And that we’d still be a striker light if it wasn’t for the renaissance of Chupa Akpom, who’s now injured, what a surprise.

And that two of our best three players are on loan.

I really do think we’ve done good business this summer and it’s a massive rebuild, but if you’re serious about promotion - which we all are, the stature of the club is and I’m sure the manager is - then you have to do better than this.

I believe it fits well with whatever our "recruitment strategy" is as we can use these guys as experienced resources until we can dip back into the transfer market. If they don't work out we've paid their wages for a few months, no commitment beyond that, no transfer fee and nothing to write off on the accounts. Makes sense.

Whether they will be another Pelts/Bamba or a failure, who knows? Not I. But they will only be a cheap failure at worst.

2 strikers we've not seen anything of. Change of formation because Wilder doesn't fancy them. Missed out on several big money strikers so let's not pretend it wasn't something we were trying to address.
Good recruitment at the back and in goal but so short in midfield we couldn't name a single midfield substitute.

Oh, and about £20m profit from 2 players left unspent.

We brought 10 players in but we lost 18.

One short term random out of contract free transfer? I’d agree with you.

Two? Northern League behaviour.

While he might not have been at the top of anyone's shopping list, it would be a pragmatic, short term signing to give us experienced cover. I have no problem with that at all.

For me they are free hits. Little to no investment if they work great, if not, hey ho no great cost or loss.

You don't know if it has been spent or not. But let's assume it is still, at least figuratively, sitting in the bank. What is the point of spending money if you can't get what/who you want. It's like me going into Tesco for a pizza, they've sold out so I buy a t-shirt.

It’s more like going to tesco for a pizza but them not having the exact one you want, so you decide to just go hungry instead.

Then it gets to 11pm, you’re absolutely starving, so you have to make do with that mouldy breadbun that’s been left in the cupboard for weeks

😂
