D J Spence career in free fall

Playing in the same side as Birger Meling - one of those players who's time at Boro looks like a typo.

Looks like Spence career is in free fall!
Bad attitude and and he really can’t defend!
I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in league one in a few years time.

Nottingham Forest promotion hero Djed Spence has made a mixed start to life in France.

The 22-year-old joined Rennes from Tottenham on loan until the end of the season in January. The deal does not include an option for the Ligue 1 side to buy as Spence is regarded as a player for the future.
Following his stellar campaign at the City Ground during the 2021/22 season, Spence was hopeful he would be getting regular minutes at Spurs. However, that wasn't the case as he was limited to just six appearances under Antonio Conte.
His stint in France got off to a positive start, as he impressed on his debut against Lille. However, things have since taken a sour turn in recent weeks, with Spence coming in for criticism for his defensive work in the 2-0 win over Clermont Foot last weekend.
Stade Rennais Online handed the right-back a rating of just 3/10 - the lowest of any player. The publication wrote: "The negative point of this victory is the defensive fragility of the Englishman, completely dropped to mark the whole game.
offensively more visible, his ball ascent bringing the 2-0. Technical and messing errors for the rest.
just one match though isn't it, maybe judge his stint when its finished, not going to be up to speed with a bunch of foreigners your need to know their movements inside and out to not cause them more problems than you solve

Was a bad move to Spurs, wasn't a Conte signing, but looks he was seduced by the ££££ and moving back home. Can't blame him really.

Personally think Spurs are just too high a level for him at present and he would have been better off staying top end Championship / bottom end of PL to get games and develop. But hey, hindsight.

He'll either end up getting bounced about on loan for the duration of his Spurs contract or they will take a big loss to get rid. Not the first and won't be the last youngster to struggle with the step up.

Can't understand all the animosity towards him - it's in Boros best interest financially to be a success there.🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I noticed his howler against Shaktar last Thursday to concede their first goal. Simple ball comes through the middle and he attempted to head it away and completed missed it.

yeah I want him to do really well so we get paid more.

but the way he went on with zero class towards us then you are always going to get people enjoy things not going right for him, does not change if he does well or bad really

He is not and never will be a top level wingback because his complete lack of defending ability , or actual effort in terms of wanting to defend

The club done really well to get the money they did for him , we got lucky really, he went on loan to a club who lined up in a specific way with 3 centre backs
and there was very little onus on Spence to defend in that tactical set up

Then of course he assumed he was the dogs b***ks, purely on his offensive stats, the reality was he didn't suddenly become a much better player
then when he was here, he just made a bit more effort and found a tactical framework that suited his offensive attrbutes

His athleticism and technical ability are very good imho, his defending is conference league standard, he has far more tools available to him than say a Tommy Smith,
but who would you rather have in your team as an orthodox right back?

I think the penny will drop with spence, but i might take another 2-3 years if i am honest, still comes across as childish and insecure, especially with his pathetic attacks
on Warnock when he was contracted to the club...................a club that i will add offered him a 2nd chance after he was dumped by fulham

I think that’s absolutely bang on 👏👏

I still like calling him Djed Spent, though

Which attacks on Warnock? Apart from the sarcastic tweet which Warnock seemed to take in good humour.
