Cyclists who cause road rage

Yes correct, you’d be expected to ride side by side and road safety is above all else

It's actually not as simple as being "expected" to ride side by side, but it provides the opportunity to do so where it's safe. The wording is something like "ride in single file on narrow or busy roads, or when riding round bends".

Riding in single file is also perfectly legal too.

So without the solid white line they are pointless.
Kind of.

I was told by a Highways Engineer at a local council that they are for drivers to warn them to expect to see cyclists on the road not for cyclists to ride in, which is why there is no minimum width.
I said, well why not make them much wider then to indicate the safe passing distance & got harrumphed at and thought no more about it.

Some months later this appeared on a local road:

That's correct, a dashed cycle lane half the width of the driving lane.

Any link between the two events is in my own head and the lane is an experiment that hasn't been repeated on other roads but it makes me smile when I use it.

think every motorist should try riding a bike on a road, loss count of the number of times I have nearly written off by car which overtakes me then realises at the last minute that he does not have enough room because of oncoming traffic and swerves back in, worse are cars or vans with trailers and they forget how long the trailer is, and that's just me by myself so you can see why they would cycle double breast reduces the chances of motorists trying to squeeze by
Exactly this, only taken the bike on the road a handful of times mainly due to how other drivers use the road, but it really does give you a completely different perspective. Its easy to behave like an **** from the safety of your car

I find cyclists on occasions a little bit irritating. In Ingleby we have a lot of cycle paths across the vast majority of the estate but the proper Lycra lads refuse to use them. What is most irritating is when on fairly busy roads - the main road up to the roundabout to the Industrial Estate they choose to ride two abreast causing traffic to back up and when the perfectly good cycle lane a few feet away is empty. Why do they do that? If people toot or comment to move over to single file they get a right mouthful off them about their right to cycle two abreast
As a cyclist (and one who cycles regularly through Ingleby) I would say that the degree of anger and badwill from many drivers is startling at times, to the degree that my safety is put at risk deliberately too.

I never ride two abreast on busy roads and on the cycle path issue, it would be simply dangerous to ride a road bike along them, given the speeds and the dual-usage with pedestrians.

I'm not sure where the badwill comes from to be honest, just a bit of patience and tolerance goes a long way.

Like car drivers there is good and bad in the cycling community. Those that ignore traffic lights, weave through parked traffic looking for any gaps. Even if they stop at lights some always set off before green, the whole cycle delivery explosion has made this sort of behaviour a thousand times worse. Many committed keen proficient and law abiding cyclist as well of course who often get tarred with the same brush as the rule breakers.
I have to say we are joined by some amazing athletes on here who reach 30mph.

I've never seen a bike path in this country that: isn't full of broken glass/ isn't used by walkers and dogwalkers/ doesn't just stop in some random place...etc

They are completely unfit for purpose, look at the bike paths they have in Holland and Belgium. If we had them in this country far more people would cycle to work.

I've ridden thousands of miles on a bike in this country and its becoming more and more unsafe every year.

The culture towards cyclists in this country is all wrong, people still see them as a nuisance and don't understand that they have as much right as car drivers to be on the road.

Its a healthy activity and far better for the environment than driving a car.

They are going to cause bloody mayhem. The rule to stop turning into a road if a pedestrian is crossing is going to cause more rear end shunts and more stop start traffic. The concept of water flow is lost on those who manage the highway code.

I'm not a cyclist but I can sympathise with what you're saying. It just stems from a total lack of patience and many have an obsession about "all cyclists" which is clearly misguided

Yeah its one of those things you can guarantee any discussion will have an element of people actually, mention of "road tax" and some mockery of wearing lycra. I mean imagine doing exercise.

Thats what i thought, i only ever reach about 23mph and that going down a bit of a bank.

I wonder if they mean 30kph, either that or they are just extremely fit.

Where I live we get a lot of cyclists especially on the country roads and through the forest and it really doesn't bother me. I can only think of one time where I have been genuinely annoyed and that was with some cycling club members which should of known better. The rest of the time it doesn't really bother me(obviously when I see a cyclist ahead I think bloody bikes lol) but I wait until its safe to pass and leave plenty of room.

Luckily the pedestrians probably won't even know about this law and won't start walking out in front of vehicles turning a corner. Hopefully the general public have more sense than the people that made the law.
