Help from Boro fact gurus please.

When we beat Covo 4-3 at their place in 1988/89, what was the order of the scoring?

(I think I remember Bernie Slaven being asked if he was going to celebrate his hat trick with a few drinks after the game, and he replied "I've got the rest of my life for drinking, now is the time for playing football"!! - Legend. (Although maybe that's boll**ks, and he never said it)).

Incidentally, does he drink nowadays?

No I think he's teetotal (although he only lives 30 yards from the pub)

I nearly knocked him down twice last night, once driving out to Stokesley Co-op and once coming back.:D (Only joking I'm very careful 'cos his dogs are nuts)

LOL  ....but I presume you don't remember the order of the goals in that game!?
What I do remember is being out and getting back to the car and putting the radio on for the results ........... "Coventry 3" ............ (useless cants) ............ "Middlesbrough 4" (get in, never doubted the lads).:sneaky:

I'm sure E74 is currently thumbing through his archives wearing white gloves to avoid damaging historic copies of the Sports Gazette, Middlesbrough's answer to the Dead Sea Scrolls.

A 4-4 draw at home comes to mind back in the 70s and I think we were 4- 1 up

Memory match

Coventry 3 Boro 4, (October 1, 1988)

After a sticky start Boro launched a rousing run of four wins out of five with a pulsating win at Highfield Road against a sixth placed Sky Blues side.

It was a ding-dong clash between two Scottish strikers with both Bernie Slaven and snarling David Speedie getting hat-tricks.

The Coventry man scored after seven minutes and Bernie blasted back within 60 seconds - the first goal City had conceded in over hours - then in a thrills and spills showdown the Boro man plundered two more.

He volleyed home from a Ripley cross then form a Burke chip and in between Gary Pallister had one ruled out for offside.

Boro looked home and dry but Coventry came surging back after the break and piled on the pressure - but Boro broke out for Burke to get a fourth.

Still the Sky Blues pressed and scrapped and Steve Pears made a string of superb saves before Speedie headed home twice to set up a nail-biting final 15 minutes in which Boro dug deep and held on.
