Could somebody tell me why Grabham wasn't flagged offside?

It wasn't a foul and it was a perfectly fine goal. As others have said, Pears should have done better. For both goals actually.

Imagine if it was the other way round and we had scored that goal, no one would be saying it shouldn't have been given.

Never a foul.

Should’ve punched it. Pears’ mistake.

How's he meant to punch it when Grabban is holding his arms down?
He would almost certainly have dived if he'd tried to shake him off too.

It was a slow ball towards goal, McNair should have been able to clear it but was too busy appealing.

For me ,it's a foul Grabban puts his hand into Pears' chest and pushes him away from the ball he is not attempting to play the ball when he does so and doesn't have possession of the ball so he is not "shielding" it. In old fashioned parlance he is obstructing his opponent. Would be given anywhere on the pitch nine times out of ten let alone when it results in a goal. I suspect that the referee couldn't see it and perhaps the lino couldn't either as he was over on the far side and Pears' body may have been in his line of sight?

If that had been reviewed on VAR it would have been disallowed. Not that I am advocating for VAR I'd rather we conceded the odd dodgy goal than have to put up with that shight.

I dont think it was a foul Grabban did well in that position, Pears could have been more aggressive but for me its the defenders playing statues that gets my goat.
They all appealed for what was either a foul or offside not sure which, but not one thought to cover the line.
A classic case of play to the whistle.
We should enjoy the chance while we can to discuss controversial decisions that split opinion because before long we will be talking about whether VAR got it right or wrong

Agreed.

But then Forest would have had a penalty before then if there was VAR, and I can't remember the last penalty we saved.

I don’t think it was a foul at all, the point is moot though. We let them get back into it. We switched off completely, allowing them to build the pressure. That’s why they scored.

At this point he should be preparing to be punching the ball, take the man and all. He’d have got his foul if he had done that. F057D879-FE1C-42DD-A855-032F82941432.jpeg

interesting that you blame the ref, and he's a cheat, when even on this board opinion is split. so the refs only right when he agrees with you?
Yes I’m completely biased in favour of the Boro and unashamedly so.
With regard to Grabban if he had not moved significantly with his arm up to obstruct Pears then I would have said fair enough but in this case he did a lot more than just shield a ball coming towards him, particularly his arm movement, it was definitely a foul.
With regard to the ref he must have known the goal would be controversial but he chose to give Forest the benefit of the doubt. It was a conscious decision, he influenced the outcome against the Boro. Why he did that I don’t know but he definitely did.

Probably the biggest heap of ***** I have ever read.

I respect your honesty. I thought the Ref was generally having one of those games where he wasn't trying to blow at every opportunity, and players were often suprised when a foul wasn't given - a bit old school, and very un-premier league (unfortunately)

Sorry about that 👍

I like that your defending the boro but that’s a bit over the top :D. There is plenty of boro fans who thought it wasn’t a foul so to say the ref is cheating is OTT.

If that was a foul against us and stops us scoring I would be devastated. He just stands his ground for me and Pears should be stronger.

Hmmm, "standing your ground" does not include walking backwards into your opponent. The correct term is "backing in" and even that does not or should not include straight arming the keeper.
Yes I think it’s the arm up which makes it a foul. If Pears was more experienced then he may have been able to manipulate the arm up into something dramatic to get the free kick, but you shouldn’t really have to do that should you? The ref should be able to ref properly without players having to throw themselves around.

I did think that.
It’s the first football game I’ve watched for ages after years of being a rugby fan. Was surprised at what he let slide. It was almost a mans game.

Used to be. It’s all got too poncey for me lately. Can’t stand the histrionics, diving and terrible attitude to the refs these days

Didn’t realise . I must say I haven’t really seen you too Football threads but didn’t realise that was why. Are you a boro fan?

Yup. Season ticket holder for ten years and been going to matches from the late eighties. Just fallen out of love with the game, not the town. Although I’m not technically from there either, wrong side of the Tees!
