Coming out of lockdown

Cuthbert, don't agree at all that Boris made attempts initially to treat people like adults. He went the opposite way and forced organizations and individuals to take their own action. This was not his intent. Treating people like adults is making a sound decision and sharing the details of the reasoning, and discussing the potential future actions. What we've heard coming out recently is that potential plans are not being shared to "avoid confusion". A it like when they thought the public would get bored of a lockdown and just ignore it

OK w_p. I guess we have a different view on that! (y) However, your statement that "He went the opposite way and forced organizations and individuals to take their own action" is kind of what I consider to be treating people like adults. I'm in favour of individuals having accountability, rather than being dictated to by government.

I think they did TRY to avoid having to make things mandatory, whilst making it clear what was advised. That didn't work.

Equally, I do take your point that with things like pubs, and certain other organizations, until it's manadatory there were probably issues with insurances and so on. As such those businesses probably wouldn't just shut if it was only advisory. So initally that part was probably wrong.

FWIW - I think they have a point about people getting bored of lockdown. We haven't got there yet, but if it went on and on then at some point people will absolutely start bending/breaking the rules more.

I'm not sure, I guess we'll see. I think the government will crack first personally and the population will be fairly cautious. Or most of us anyway.
I realize it's all open to interpretation but I just think they were still in economy saving mode rather than expecting people to take their own actions.

France will start a staged lifting of lockdown from May 11th. Schools to gradually reopen. Also a series of returns to work. There was talk of restrictions on the elderly but it will now be left to individual choice. No events initially, but if it goes well bars and restaurants could possibly reopen around July. A plan in place for testing, and a strong 'suggestion' of masks to be worn.

Oh yeah, some up to date stats from France.

"The announcement came as the latest figures released show the death toll has risen to 14,967 in France since the beginning of the epidemic (+574 in 24 hours).
In total 9,588 people have died in hospital and 5,379 in care homes and other establishments, the Directorate General of Health announced.
A further 6,821 patients are in a serious condition in intensive care, with 227 new patients admitted to these units within the last 24 hours. Taking into account discharges, there are now 24 fewer patients in intensive care, which, although a small number, represents the fifth day of decline."
Lockdown started on 17th March
