Not a big drinker but do like the experience of going to a good good independent coffee shop. Plenty around us.
Usually have around 4/5 a week and my go to is - an oat milk cappo

Could do with losing a few pounds so decided to do just black coffee - bit of a revelation really.
Been out today and we had one each at a local place - gorgeous (not cheap mind).
Spurred on by this we went on to buy some beans from a local shop.

Chuffin hec - £23 for 125g of the one we liked, but, hey ho (we will save on milk) 😂

It does sound daft but the taste of pure unadulterated black coffee is quite a revelation.

£23 for 125g? Where u buying

Rountons is £28 for 1kg and they will grind it to your spec if needed

Aeropress or v60/tricolate with some rountons beans for me

That does sound very expensive. My coffee subscription is £9 for 250g, delivered which is already about 2-3x what supermarket prices would be.

I went to black coffee years ago to avoid the hassle of the milk rota at work. Took me a few weeks to get used to the taste and then it opened up coffee to me.

I still love a milk based drink, particularly a flat white, which I order when I'm out but at home it's always a black coffee. V60 filter my current favourite brew method.

We were in Dax last year and went for a Madeleine and coffee in a cafe and they only sold black coffee. I turned my nose up at it before tasting it and like a little child asked the wife where the milk/cream was. I soon had to retract my scornful face and was delighted by the taste.

Also, Madaleine's in Dax are to die for. ;)

I have repeatedly tried and failed to get into black coffee, but regret it every time I let it pass my lips.
You should maybe try a café allongé which is what I'll drink if I want to sit a little longer at a bar. It's basically somewhere between an espresso and an americano. Some places will just add the extra hot water (or supply it in a little jug) and others will allow more water to pass through the coffee grinds. I'm a sinner - I like coffee with sugar.

I do wonder if I should add sugar. I’ve tried black coffee with various amounts of hot water added, and can’t find anything that doesn’t just taste like diarrhoea to me. An espresso is literally one of the worst tastes in the world to me.

I have mates who buy Bolivian beans grown at high altitudes and hand grind them and stuff and act like right connoisseurs and they take the **** but I really just don’t see what it is that I’m not getting.

I wouldn't panic, maybe coffee just isn't your thing.

Well cappuccino IS my thing but as I do intermitttent fasting I’d love to get into black coffee. I still feel like there’s a magic formula I just haven’t found.
Espresso is usually a dark roast which hides a lot of the flavour. Roasters go for dark roast when they have poor quality beans. Anything you get prepacked or from a supermarket will be dark, whether it says light or dark on the packet.

A specialty roaster will usually sell a lighter roast because they are using better beans and then the flavours can be picked out. They can be crisp, sweet, acidic, fruity and they are usually light bodied.

Maybe trying lighter roast with a different brew method like a filter. I used to prefer a punchy syrupy espresso but now I like the lighter coffee with the subtle flavours.

The linked article explains it.

It's very much like wine. You might say you don't like wine if you've only had really full bodied heavy red wines but you just haven't tried a much lighter wine.

Call me stingy but I have my milk frother which is perfect for the single cup of whatever you like. Just add your drip coffee or even some good instant and you’ve got a nice cup to perk you up.

I find Rounton's to be expensive...£18 for 1kg of freshly roasted beans from Rave...you get 10% off with a subscription 👍...but coffee is all about taste...someone might love a cheap old bean from Spar and others may love a bean that's been swallowed by a monkey...passed out and then roasted 🫣...each to their own 😂

I can take or leave wine, but I CAN drink it. I genuinely struggle to finish an espresso.

If coffee is made correctly it shouldn't require sugar, it should be naturally sweet. Any cafe serving a bitter, or sour coffee, don't know how to make coffee. Best give them a miss. Better still learn how to make coffee, it's not rocket science.

I had the same experience and price buying 3 pork chops from my excellent local butcher last week. I think I'll be eating less pork chops in the foreseeable.
