Cockneys

Teesside Poly had one of the best Comp. Sci. degree courses in the country back then. I should know; I have one. Mind you, I still ended up in London for work.
As you say, it was a Poly at the time. I wanted to go to a university.

I also wanted to move away from the Boro to study.

Plus my teachers wanted me to hedge my bets and do a joint degree in comp sci with maths. As comp sci was a relatively new subject in 77.

Queen Mary College in East London had a good reputation. Offering the joint degree my teachers had recommended. A bonus was they offered me very low grade A level results to attract me there. Plus my brother was living in London. So I had someone not far away.

QMC was based in Mile End. So I was studying in the middle of real cockneys. About 4 miles east of the Bow Bells. With the sound supposed to be heard around 6 miles away to the east before traffic noise increased. If you believe t'internet.

Perhaps they went to Teesside Uni and ended up sticking around, I know a handful of people who’ve done that in the last 10 years.
I did that
Although I ended up having to go back home because ICI wouldn’t give me a permanent job.
Could you tell from their accents that they hailed from the area within the sound of bow bells or is every “southern twang” labelled as cockney?. It’s like people who live down south calling everybody from the North East geordies and you’d hate that stereotyping.
I can vouch for this.

The amount of times I was asked where I came from, replied “Peterborough”, and the retort was “oh so your from London then”

Not as bad as being labelled a jawdee or Welsh by everyone when I moved to Brighton in 83.

I remember a time when I was on the North Sea Ferry to Rotterdam about 78ish. Me and a mate sat down at a four seater table in the restaurant with an old couple who started to chat with us. Quite a pleasant couple. The auld dear asked us where we were from.

"Middlesbrough", my mate replied. "OOH, so you're Geordies?"

I bit my lip and asked where they came from... "Manchester" was the response.

"Ooh, so you're Scousers?"

Nuff said, point proven 😊
