Coburn on loan

Carrick was indicating yesterday that there was a plan for Coburn but it was subject on transfer dealings being completed - he and the club must be satisfied with the situation.

The day before our next game we lose a striker when we're already short up top? Seems really odd timing considering said striker/s won't be able to play.

Barmy, rather than trying out a kid who has impressed in the past we just sign lesser players (Hoppe) and other kids (Gilbert) to play in his position instead. Also see Sol Brynn.

Do we have our priorities in the right place if money is as tight as we are led to believe?

Nowhere, but if he's going on loan the likelihood he will be in the match day squad for Coventry is slim
He won't be in the match day squad because he's not fit.

As stated above he'll probably go out on loan if we bring in those players we are hoping for. Nothing is done yet.

Them two mentioned havent played so not really keeping him out of the team. Even if he is in front of Hoppe and Gilbert that doesnt mean he will be first choice.
Ideally you would have him coming off the bench when we need a goal but that stunts his development.

I don't think he's ready to start games, if we are relying on him to be first choice were in trouble.

Well firstly I don't think either of those play in Coburn's position.

Secondly what are you suggesting? We shouldn't sign any young players because we already have young players in our youth set up?

Thirdly. Whose priorities aren't in the right place? The club's? (because we actually seem to invest a lot in the academy and have a pretty good record of bringing players through). Or Carrick's?

Because ultimately this'll be Carrick's decision whether Coburn goes out on loan or not. Based on footballing reasons (I.e. whether he's good enough for us right now and whether a loan would be beneficial to Coburn's development or not). I suspect Carrick's priorities are trying to win as many matches as possible and put things in place to strengthen the club in the medium to long term. What do you think they should be?

Other than that, good post.

The problem with Coburn is he plays his best football when there's someone else up front with him - and we don't play like that...

The two full games he's played for us (he scored in both), he was up front with Sporar (vs Luton) and Watmore (vs West Brom) - every other game he's been brought on as an impact sub.

If you watch the highlights of those games, the strikers have made runs to allow Coburn the space to score the goal - which is what happened for him at Bristol Rovers too.

At Bristol he was up front with one of two very good league 1 strikers - Aaron Collins scored 16 goals and assisted 13 - John Marquis scored 11.

I agree Coburn is very good at what he does....the decoy runs and finding the space is good intelligent play. However, what he does, doesn't fit our playing style. He'd be marked out of the game on his own.

He needs to go on loan to a league one club who play similar football to what we do.

I think he will be capable of playing Chubas #10 role in the future. Saw it in the Chelsea cup match when he dropped deap. If Chuba goes I'd keep him.

I don’t believe coburn wouldn’t have been effective playing up front on his own with Akpom playing as the #10, we’ll never know as he wasn’t given a chance to show it. What we do know is that hoppe was brought in to play in that position too, presumably so was Gilbert as he is a striker and Rogers has started both games as a striker in our formations

In the future, I agree. I think Coburn is a top player. But this season, definitely not... He's got next to no experience playing as a lone striker or as a #10.
You can't just throw him into the deep end and hope for the best - Boro fans have absolutely no patience, and he's a confidence player.

It only worked for Hackney because he was next to very experienced players, Howson, Mowatt, and at Scunthorpe he was next to a player called Grant who's played 500+ league games.

It would have helped Coburn with Akpom as #10 but that's in a way what I'm saying...
Coburn needs someone experienced next to him at this level, or he needs to drop down a level to gain his own experience.

Gilbert played as a CM for Brentford B, similar to the Hackney role - he's been brought here as cover at #10, I don't think he's a striker.

Hoppe I agree - didn't work out... Rogers - I think he's been "okay" so far, we're only one league game into the season.

I'd like to see Josh sent on loan to Oxford United.

Similar formation/style to how we play - They played a 18 year striker (O'Donkor) in that position for the latter half of last season - I actually think he's quite good, but he's not scoring and was subbed off early last weekend (injury maybe). The other striker they have was Macualey Langstaff's strike partner at Notts County... Rubens Rodrigues, who's just signed and jumped up two divisions.

If he can go to Oxford, cement a place in that team, and score some goals... He's ready for us next season in the premier league or championship.

Marcus Browne's still there too - they never played together here but they will have trained together - a familiar face might help him settle in.
