Coburn is the 2nd Quickest at the club

I think its a wind up. I don't think hes finished that race he had against Thiago Silva. One of the slowest players I've seen at the Riverside this season.

I think Coburn quite quick on the pitch. Can't judge a player's speed by his height, but there is an assumption smaller players a quicker.

I'd question what Crooks (and fans) mean by fast though. 100m speed isn't that much use on a football pitch. When, if ever, does a player sprint for anywhere close to 100m in a football match? Maybe if a player has to frantically get back into defence after a bad corner, but no other time.

The NFL has been testing the athleticism of new players coming out of college this week. They measure straight line speed over 40 yards, and include a split over the first 10 yards. They consider this a far more important measure in their game than 100m speed, and I think the same is true for football: it's acceleration that's important rather than speed. I recall reading that Ishmael Miller was extremely quick over 100m (possibly a school-level 100m champion but I might be wrong about that), but he didn't show it on a football field as it took him the first 20m to get going.
Who has mentioned 100m in this context?

I'm surprised if he is that quick - but he certainly isn't slow, like some make out.

I also know that the spell where he was fit & lead the line was our only consistently successful spell of the season, however quick or otherwise he is.

To be fair the recognised FA fitness measures are nearly all based on short bursts, one after another, at different intervals. I don't think any measures long distance stamina.

He's been towing a caravan a fair bit this season then!

I wonder over what distance? Lath, Jones and Bangura look much quicker over an initial 20 metre burst.
Agreed. I suspect this was from the pre-season tests. When we hadn't signed two of those players. Probably over 30-40 yards, certainly not over the first 10 yards. He's a big lad, so it's always going to take a bit to get moving.

Gary Pallister was a junior sprint champion.
Similar speed to Coburn - both big units

We sent Nicky Mohan to the Rumbelows Sprint challenge. I admit I was surprised at the time.

Worth remembering Usain Bolt is 6'5'' but, as international sprinters go, he wasn't noted for being a fast starter. It was after 50m that he dominated.

I remember Arsenal claiming Bellerin was as fast as Boult over 100m even with his boots on. Never take these claims seriously, it's the first few metres that matter in football
Bellerin was absurdly fast before he did his knee and other injuries mounted up tbf. Actually easier to believe that than Coburn being the second fastest player at the club.

One of Traore's first games for us was against Arsenal. There was a clip where Traore broke through and he's running with the ball so not running at full speed and Bellerin couldn't quite catch him fully sprinting.

I think Bellerin covers more distance than Traore in that clip.
Traore runs straight up the pitch, Bellerin runs across the pitch.

Traore, of course, has the ball which makes it more impressive
