City Breaks

Heard this off a few people.. hopefully be my next European break. Last time I checked could only see flights from Liverpool or London though which is a bit of a pain
We flew to Malaga then travelled by train to Seville and it only took a couple of hours, plus the temperatures for that time of year are the best you'll find in Spain.

It does depend on what you're wanting but we had a cracking weekend a few years ago, where we based ourselves in Dusseldorf and saw Fortuna play on the Friday night, went to Dortmund on the Saturday and then VFL Bochum on the Sunday.

I realise we have our very biased correspondent on this thread but Malaga is fantastic although I'm not climbing that hill again.

Looking to book something for me and the Mrs for mid to late Feb next year. Looking at the following options:

Barcelona
Budapest
Venice
Vienna
Lisbon
Florence
Rome
Prague
Berlin
Amsterdam

I have not been to any of them so recommendations would be appreciated. Also what is the best way of booking these? Through a Travel Agent or just doing flights and accommodation separate using skyscanner and the like?

In terms of our interests - Good Food, good bars/evening entertainment, History, element of romance for her indoors.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
San Sebastián fulfils all those criteriia

Amazing food
Buzzing nightlife
History

plus two brilliant beaches and should you get away with going to see football you also have Real Sociedad.

We did a day trip to Bruges on train from Brussels this year. Beautiful place but felt we pretty much did what we wanted in that time.

That said, wouldn't mind going again in the depth of winter with fewer tourists, it can get mad busy.

As said previously, Lisbon is a fantastic place with a little bit of everything (history, modern architecture, parks, the weather).

Valencia is great too.

It’s great in winter but is even busier than summer around Christmas

I went for Xmas markets about 10 years ago and it was rammed everywhere. Was great though.
I did overnight ferry from Hull on a Friday night. Saturday night in Bruges. Overnight ferry back Sunday night.

Was great. Two full days in Bruges was enough.

Gdańsk. I’ve been 5 times. Fly Ryanair from either LBA or NCL. Flights can be around £5-£15 in February. City is a short taxi ride from airport and less than £6. Book apartments through Airbnb. You’ll be shocked how cheap it is. Beautiful city with good food and drink. The Second World War started in Gdansk so lots of history, boat trips and museums. Weather is cold but easy to get around.

Verona. I’ve been 5 times. You might have to fly Ryanair from Birmingham. It’s a stunning city with a better Collesseum than Rome. A short taxi ride from the airport into the city. Stay at Hotel Mastino or close by. Stunning piazzas and shops and Castles to die for. Loads to see and do. Go for 3 days minimum. Spend a day or more in Verona.
Day 2 get the train to Venice. 1 hour journey and approx 9eu each way per person. Return to Verona in the evening.
Day 3 get the bus to Sirmione Lake Garda. Jaw dropping beautiful, romantic and only 40 mins away for 3eu each way.

Vouch for San Sebastian. I always thought it was not cheap to get to but the budget airlines fly to Biarritz and its a 40 min bus journey away. We had a fantastic weekend there. The pincho bar scene in the old town needs to be experienced.

Lisbon is great, but be prepared to deal with the cobbles and hills.

Another shout for Lisbon so many different places to explore. Friendly people nowhere nearly as crowded as other places .
We did a week there and then went to the coast to Cascais for another week.
Fantastic holiday

Two days is about right, I had 4 nights and was really struggling by the end of it. It’s a beautiful city though, must be a top 5 in Europe
