City Breaks

Looking to book something for me and the Mrs for mid to late Feb next year. Looking at the following options:

Barcelona
Budapest
Venice
Vienna
Lisbon
Florence
Rome
Prague
Berlin
Amsterdam

I have not been to any of them so recommendations would be appreciated. Also what is the best way of booking these? Through a Travel Agent or just doing flights and accommodation separate using skyscanner and the like?

In terms of our interests - Good Food, good bars/evening entertainment, History, element of romance for her indoors.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hmm from your list I've been to the following and would rate in this order:

Rome
Barcelona
Amsterdam
Florence
Prague
Budapest
Venice

We went to Rome at the end of June and for me it was the best city I've ever been to. 5 nights wasn't enough!

We booked everything separately. We stayed in Trastevere which was a very good decision - its is really nice, trendy, full of bars, and restaurants and a short walk to the sights. Its a bit cheaper than right in the centre too.

I did a bit of research beforehand about places to eat on Youtube, Tripadvisor, etc and found several places that were good value and good quality. In the main tourist areas the restaurants are expensive and not great quality.

Almost everyone we came across spoke English so no worries there. We can both speak Spanish so we picked up a bit of Italian as its so similar but it isn't necessary.

I'd add Málaga to your list too by the way. It should be cheap and easy in Feb. And the city is really nice. Most give it a miss and head to Torremolinos, etc. and they are missing out in my opinion.

I second this - both Rome generally, and Trastevere specifically ......

..... it's no Malaga though ;)

Personally would save Italian/Spanish ones for spring or summer when you can enjoy the outdoor eating/drinking.

Amsterdam is great if you've never been and lots of touristy stuff to keep busy indoors if you do get bad weather.
Lots of flights available as well so can find flights to fit your plans easier than some of the other destinations

I used to always book using skyscanner and accommodation through booking.com but I think its just as cheap to book through expedia now on one booking rather than separating. I still use skyscanner though to identify which flights I want.

I wouldn't go to Budapest again in a rush. Enjoyed our time there but compared to other cities it's poor, we went around Christmas for the markets and compared to other cities it was really poor. Every restaurant was expensive as was bars.

I enjoyed Lisbon and never had a bad time in Berlin.

I've been to most of those with the exception of Budapest. They're all great cities. Venice blew me away - I went late winter/early spring so didn't have all the cruise ships rocking up, I imagine in peak summer tourist season it may be a different experience.

Lisbon is great and lots of fun as is Berlin.

I've only not been to Venice and Lisbon.
Out of the rest and based on recent experience I'd say Florence.

But be careful to factor in travelling time because you want to get as much out of your break as possible.

Good luck 👍

Outdoor eating / drinking all year round in Malaga - yes, there can be some showers, but any heavy rain tends to be during the night, and it's certainly warm enough to sit outside under the canopies.

I'd go for Lisbon from that list. Not too big so you'll get to see most of the decent bits on foot easily. You may find you have time for a short train journey to Sintra if the weather's nice, and it could be if you're lucky.

The food and drink are good and you aren't going to be paying through the nose for it.

You might be able to treat her to a match.
