Choosing your team

My first team was South Bank United and that was because I lived in walking distance to the ground. I would walk up Redcar Rd to the corner of Normanby Road, I had it drilled into me only to cross the road when the men did and then would go through the turnstile to pay my 3d to get in. My grandad's brother was on the committee and he would get me an oxo and lift me over into the seats.

My dad (who is not a football fan) took me with my uncles to watch the Boro when I was around five years of age and was mesmerised by the colour of the turf, the smell of the stadium and the buzz around it. I can remember standing at the entrance to the seats and looking down in awe. That was me hooked for life.

My uncles use to tease me and ask me who my favourite team was - South Bank, I would reply, with Middlesbrough second.

My dad would never get me a South Bank United kit because they played in Sunderland's colours.

Edit: I meant to add that the film Fever Pitch got the scene of him entering Highbury perfect. I think we can relate to that.

I disagree with the OP to be honest. I think it should be more about your background. For example if I was to have a son they would live in between Brentford’s two grounds but I wouldn’t want them supporting them necessarily I’d want them to be Boro fans and the other half would probably want them to be gooners.
You just drip feed them info on Boro, eventually they will learn who to follow.

My eldest son was Leeds mad at the age of 6 and that was because my mate follows Leeds and was buying him scarfs from around Europe. For Christmas I would buy him Boro book and kits, take him to the games and eventually he came round to my way of thinking.

Coluka you might have been hoping that Leeds beat Chelsea but in reality Chelsea won. 2-2 at Wembley Chelsea won the replay 2-1. Dont remember Leeds beating Chelsea in a final. They did beat The Ar*e 1-0 in 68 League Cup Final. Maybe it was that one.
Yeah you are right it was 2-2 and they lost the replay 👍 Time plays tricks on the memory, but I must correct you in so far as you stating I might have wanted Leeds to win 😲 I am 100% sure that was NEVER the case. Assumptions were made by my relative, because of Don Revie in particular, but in truth, my dad despised him, as I grew to do later on too.

By that logic my son would be a Gillingham fan. I’ll just be happy if he likes football and will watch a game with me tbh, will take him to Boro games but he can support whoever he likes and I’ll take him to see them play too. I was born and bred in Sussex, it was a uncle who supported Boro that got me watching them. My dad is a Wolves fan but would never give him the satisfaction of supporting them. My girlfriends family are all died hard Brighton fans and her dad is a season ticket holder so I’ll be rooting for them in that game today, me and him always talk Boro and Brighton so always keep an eye on each other’s teams.
