China recriminations.

Just put a ban on them buying up half the U.K. like they have been the last few years. Weren’t the visa restrictions for Chinese nationals relaxed a few years back? I’m sure a small visa surcharge wouldn’t go amiss.

Only a month before confirmed community transmission. That was quite a feat. Taiwan and other countries responded at the beginning of January; our PM bragging about shaking hands on 3 March.

Taiwan attempted to contact the WHO in December. As a result of the UN with their affiliated bodies including the WHO not recognising Taiwan as a sovereign member state, they were unable to get them to act earlier. China knew about human to human transmission before they alerted the WHO in the middle of January. When it became evident there was transmission, they did nothing to stop international travel out of Wuhan. Yet they halted all domestic trains/flights from the city. We now know that the first cluster of outbreaks in Thailand, Northern Italy, the West Coast of the USA and Paris are all traced back to Chinese nationals who had COVID. They were most likely asymptomatic, but they were still allowed to travel abroad anyway.

Please stop buying this Chinese propaganda that they tried to alert the world early on. Under the CCP they have a history of cover ups in national disasters and pandemics. Masks or no masks, do you honestly believe that in a country of 1.4 billion, added with what we now know about this virus, that only 4600 people have died? According to their own 'official figures' in the space of 10 days in mid February, the number of cases fell from 7000 to 214. Come on, use your head. You won't find me defending Boris and his handshakes. The guy is a complete clown. But back to the issue of China's role in this pandemic. They are completely responsible for unleashing this virus, whether it may be from a lab or wet food market. It isn't the first virus to come out of China, with this evil regime in charge, it certainly won't be the last.

Mitch, when it comes to re-writing history and global coercion they're no different to the way the West has behaved.

Their stockpiling of PPE still can't compete with the economic terrorism being carried out globally by the West.

Over the last four decades our idiot leaders have forced us to rely on China for manufacturing, the Chinese have benefitted but it was our decision, not theirs.

As for the virus, is it now accepted across the board that it was man made?

Taiwan responded, we didn't.

China didn't announce that covid was human transferable until after Chinese New year... There's a part in the Panorama programme that shows flights from China as Chinese people travelled worldwide for New Year.
Easy to see how it got around the world so quickly.

20 January is before 25 January in my calendar.

Sorry, i've got that wrong then. No need to be sarcy.
Still, they didn't stop them travelling abroad.

Found the Panorama documentary on YT

Apologies for the satire

They did cover it up for 6 days and I recall major stoppage of travel for new year (including a friend of ours who abandoned a trip from the UK). But Taiwan had taken precautionary measures three weeks before transmission was known. We should be looking at our own government's (lack of) response as they are the ones accountable to the people of the UK.

I had already gone into social distancing mode when our PM was bragging about hand shaking.

Taiwan was at an advantage to the UK as the actively distrust anything that China say and do if fact disbelieve anything China say.
Taiwan became aware of suspicious activity in China, contacted the China controlled WHO and when the didn’t get the any response conducted their own enquiries.
As stated above there is a confirmed positive test in Paris that was taken on 29/12/19. China were well aware of the virus well before this.

That case was confirmed on 4 May. I was well aware of the virus before that.

I
All the people who believe a word the Chinese state media says, I’m guessing you’ve never spent a second there, or read any informed criticism
I've lived there for about 10 years of my life starting back in 1985. I don't believe China state media.

I'm more worried about the way our government has responded to this.

I think china’s recriminations and sanctions would be bigger than ours

Not suggesting it would be done in isolation. And I'm not suggesting revenge should be a motive.
Just really concerned that the next one could be even worse.

If 6% growth is a downturn in the economy, bring it on.

My point was it was steadily declining, which it was, I appreciate 6% growth would be welcomed by most, and appreciate your point, but China were very unhappy about that decline at the time and were sabre rattling with Trump. They were in part blaming the west in general but in particular USA ... tarriffgate etc.

Agree, they were, but the growth rates of the early 2000s were not sustainable and much of that growth was infrastructure following the late 90s far east recession. Then came 2008 and then increasing oil prices.

China was well aware of the virus before 29/12/19. They just choose to keep it to themselves.
The fact that a resident of Paris was tested positive on 29/12/19 shows how far it had spread by then. I believe the person had not been to China and the only explanation was he had caught it off his wife who worked in a supermarket at or near CDG airport.

When I saw earlier in the year that the Chinese economy had grown 1% when the rest our the world was tanking, it did set off a few alarm bells.

I'm not really a conspiracy theorist but the Rees-Mogg school of disaster investing did flash into my head for a moment. Release a virus you already have preparations in place for but the rest of the world doesn't. Catch the rest of the world off guard and watch them struggle. Benefit from sale of products worldwide during this period. Buy up struggling assets in said countries.

I do think there needs to be a reign check on foreign ownership in the UK.
