Disagree , think we are entering Cold War 2.0 though with China being now the soviets . Russia only being relevant because it has nukes , but aside from that, not relevant at all .

Ww3 starts when 2 nuclear nations are in direct military confrontation in my opinion. Would have happened if enforced a no fly zone over Ukraine
 
It’s always the same whatabout arguments. Many nations have acted horrifically over the years, certainly European empires and the US through a number of unsavoury interventions. These are certainly topics worthy of their own thread discussions.

I don’t get why people have to bring the US into almost any argument rather than focus on what the authoritarian dictatorships of China and Russia are doing, it’s as if some believe these states have been, or are, benevolent or have justification in their aggression- there’s even Kremlin propaganda on this very thread but I’m far too tired to go over that old ground again. China and Russia are terrorisers of their own and other populations and have been for a considerable time, a fact I have seen first hand more than once. Is it a strange leftist solidarity thing because China calls itself communist and Russia was the leading element of the USSR, I’ve seen enough social media communists spouting this stuff… or something else?

I don’t like America as the world police, but I like it a damn sight more than China or Russia. How many of those military bases are on US overseas territory, how many are genuinely unpopular with their local populaces, how many countries actively want them removed and will the world actually be safer if the US military took itself off home?

Russia have attacked just as many nations as the US. What is even worse for Russia is they do it for inperialist reasons too . They want the land to add to Russia . The US has never done that in the Middle East , not saying it justifies the US . The reason they haven’t recently is because Russia was on the bones of its **** financially . Georgia is evidence they’re doing it again and now Ukraine . Syria too

The F***ing gall of the Russians to have a go at the US over attacking other nations . But then , this is all to do with trying to isolate the US for China and Russia . Europe and ourselves need to be working closer with the Americans , along with our other allies around the world

Spot on, China and Russia will of course try to split the US from Europe.

We need each other, we have to be smarter than that.

The Russian Empire certainly acquired land and peoples through both treaty and outright conquest and the Soviet Union continued that trend. Russia is is trying to do the same but there’s some very obvious reasons why countries try to resist being ruled from Moscow by someone like Putin. As with China, there are stupidly obvious reasons why people resist China’s overtures, not done Tibet or the Uyghurs much good though.

I’m certainty on the left and would love to have peaceful international relationships with countries like Russia, a place that’s very dear to me, but just as empire building and Middle Eastern interventions have proven to be painful episodes for humanity, so too is Russian aggression and Chinese oppression.

The us has allies because it is good at projecting soft power and their allies actually want to be their allies too. Russia doesn’t understand this , and seems to believe all its allies are being forced to do what the us tells them . They believe this because it’s how they’ve historically treated the nations under their sphere of influence .

Russia can cry about about losing nations they think they have a right to have control over as much as they want but the fact of the matter is, these countries and it’s citizens don’t want anything to do with Russia . They will resist. Most of the Warsaw pact and soviet members hate them because of how they were treated .

Find me a nation that has thrived and improved under Russian influence

The eu is also good at projecting soft power too . I believe Ukraine wants in the eu because of the massive economic boom in Poland from being in it
 
We all knew China would use Ukraine as a bellwether to any Taiwan actions.

It looks like XI now thinks he has the right amount of “pain” to push on to the next stage.

XI has gone public with his aim for the island.

He said this in 2021

The thing I thought was intriguing is the title of the recent operation "United Sharp Sword"

Implies more than one nation ?? Could russia ( through Vladivostok) provide air-sea cover as well.

Who knows?

I think Russia may have enough to think about in Ukraine though.

I think all of the Chinese military development needs to be seen alongside everything they are doing to promote the Yuan, particularly in Russia, and the other trade and strategic blocks they are developing.
 
Chinese weaponry and know how are in infancy stage. They know a US response would crush them and do untold damage to their economy. Should war break out, I would expect NK to try to muscle in with some attrocity aimed at SK or Japan, only to get totally battered.
