Charlton Champions

First time I have seen it - E74 thank you for posting

We won 4-0 with Malcolm Smith and Eric McMordie both did not normally play it looked like Mills and Souness were not playing.

The BBC website have ben running a poll on the best ever Championship/L2 winners - Boro 1974 were not included in their top 10 which was crazy - That team of 1974 was probably the best of any team or close to it. I can't remember anyone winning the Championship in March.

That was excellent.
Great to see a packed old Ayresome Park and hear the Holgate ( we shall overcome).
It truly was the 'happiest place in Britain' at that time.

Great that Erimus thanks for posting, I was only 3 at the time so dont remember that season, think i was 5 when i first went to the great old stadium and was hooked from then on.

Brilliant! Great shot of the old chap lowering the MFC flag at the end. Was that a very young Eric Paylor at the press conf??

Aw that was excellent thank you.

That brought back so many memories. The chants, the atmosphere, the guys in white coats selling drinks and snacks on the perimeter even!

Finally found my DVD (y) You can never tire of watching that

IMHO, best Boro team ever (y)

Young Don Masson, before my time, Eric McManus Notts County's keeper had a couple of games on loan under Willie Maddren, losing one & drawing one, when he became our 5th loaned player ever & our 3rd loaned keeper, behind, 1st Stephen Pears our 1st loaned player & Martin Thomas GK, our 2nd loaned player
Mr Middlesbrough, our iconic legend opening the scoring
Graeme Souness kicking every ball on the bench
A good shot of the boysend too (y)

Thanks dad for takling me, the memories are there forever (y)

I remember one early August saturday morning before the 73-74 season kicked off, a parcel was delived to our house, I was 12 at the time, my dad excitedely came running upstairs & gave me the parcel to open, it was a 73-74 home shirt I'd won in a competition in the Sports Gazette, think I was one of the 1st kids at school to be wearing the top when in PE, wore it to death when playing over Sammys field & St micks on sunday morning, afternoon football, great, great days

Don Masson was a Boro product and regular in the third division promotion team who left to step down two divisions six years earlier so he was already getting on a bit by the time of this game. However, his best years were yet to come as he joined QPR the following season and was part of their team which almost won the League Championship two years later. He got picked for Scotland and went to the World Cup in 1978.

I was the same age, what a fantastic season it was. I'd just started A levels too. Always stood in the centre of the Holgate about cross bar height. I've not experienced a season like it, the atmosphere,, the power of the team, the goals.

I remember a few old boys returning with their new clubs, Masson with County, Downing with Orient for a cracker of a game early in the season. Laidlaw and big Hughie with Carlisle when a Craggsy cracker settled the game and Souness came into the side, shortly after to be joined by Murdoch, what a midfield partnership.

The players were part of the community.

Thanks Erimus, a great watch.
