Championship relegation battle

We think we have problems, Blackburn Rovers are in free fall, one win in 14 games on 39 points.

Sheffield Wednesday have won 4 out of the last 5 and it would be some achievement if they escaped the drop currently sat on 35 points

Huddersfield Town seem to be in trouble, they are drawing alot of games and currently sat on 38 points, 4th bottom.

This season I reckon 50 plus points will be needed to stay up which is quite rare in the championship.

Going down I reckon,

Stoke City
Huddersfield
Rotherham

I reckon 14th place for us lot.

We are in freefall as well, the only thing in our favour is the points we have and key players to come back from injury. Occasionally one team comes from nowhere to get relegated on the last day of the season, if I didn't support Boro we would the team I would be looking at as an outside bet. We need to win against Norwich to stop the QPR and Birmingham matches becoming hands over the eyes moments. If we get to the Blackburn match without a win then I will start to properly worry about us .

As it stands I can see us beating watford last game of the season, I genuinely don't know which other games we will win, depends which boro turn up.

6 points above safety currently.

We'll be fine. No question.

There are definitely 3 worse teams than us in the league.

Rotherham are good as gone. The other 2 spots are up for grabs, but QPR, Sheff Wed, Huddersfield & Plymouth will all finish below us.

Likely that Millwall, Stoke & Birmingham will too.

We’ve played Huddersfield twice already

Sheffield Wednesday however…. 🤔
An yes my mistake. I couldn’t actually remember playing Huddersfield a second time until you mentioned it. 2 - 1 win wasn’t it? They had us under the cosh for a while too.

I don't think we have problems regarding relegation.

If we don't pick up another point all season, we've got a good chance of staying up. 44 points has been enough many times in the past.
And we will pick up more points.

I'm not advocating complacency though. We all want and expect more than survival. However, even very poor form (6 defeats, 6 draws) would see us staying up from here.

In most seasons I would agree with this but this season its really tight at the bottom, most teams have 11 games left, so I would expect every team below us to win at least 2 or 3 games ( except Rotherham maybe ) so if you take Stoke who are 3rd bottom currently on 38 points, if they win 3 games out of the 11 that will put them on 47 points. I still think we will win a few more games and finish around the 60 point mark, middle of the pack.

When we were 6 points off the playoffs people were saying we were still in it. It is far easier to drop down the league than rise up it. Every week you don't win just sucks you closer.

This season there are 4 teams at the top getting a lot of points. There is only one team at the bottom getting barely any (unless they are playing us). The rest are concertinaed in the middle and everyone else is capable of winning 4 of the next 6. They are also capable of winning 0 of the next 6.

This season is looking similar to the 2012/13 season where there weren't any terrible teams. That year Wolves finished 2nd bottom with 51 and Peterborough were relegated with 54. If 55 is the number needed I wouldn't be confident with us getting another 11 points.

We are in danger. It seems preposterous but we are. We can't keep clean sheets and we aren't scoring goals. Confidence is very low and we play 3 of those teams below us in the next 4. That 6 points safety buffer could look very different going into the next international break in a fortnight.

Games which I think ( hope ) we will get points from,

A - qpr 3 points
H - Blackburn 1 point
H - Sheffield 3 points
H - Swansea 3 points
A - Cardiff 1 point
H - Watford 3 points

The other games who knows but I could quite easily see us lose all them games I've mentioned above and then beat Southampton, Leeds and Ipswich 😅

We will be fine as we'll pick up a couple of wins from somewhere, just like beating Leicester. It will be papering over some pretty big cracks though, and if we don't address the issues and start next season well then Carrick will get the boot by October and we'll back to the drawing board. It's a little bit too close for comfort though, and will be twitchy, especially if we lose on Wednesday night and on Saturday. I think if we do lose the next two the pressure will grow on Carrick and Gibson may be forced to act now.

I said we didn't have much chance then, and I don't think we have much chance of relegation now for the same reason.

It's not the number of points between the playoffs/relegation zone and us; it's the number of teams.

Any of the teams below us could overtake us except Rotherham. To be relegated, we'd need at least 8 out of 9 teams to overtake us. They won't all prove good enough to do that.
