Championship next Season

I think i saw that 19 of the 24 Championship teams next season have been in the Premier League. As already mentioned some famous teams with large fan bases.

ITs impossible to predict but i expect Leicester and Southampton to be very strong. Leeds i am not so sure, they are a bit of a mess at the moment which makes me happy.

He's rarely played this season so I can't imagine there will be a lot of interest in him this summer.

It reminds of Emnes in a way. He wasn't good enough for the Premier League but was excellent when he had a full season in the Championship.
If he stays at Southampton he could be an absolute beast in the Championship. Hope they sell him .......😬

I have a feeling Southampton are going to be very strong. Think Smallbone will be a big player for them in midfield and I expect Armstrong to chip in with a lot of goals. Sulemana looked quality against Liverpool and he could be one to one watch next season.

Leicester are in financial trouble and will lose a lot of players, although even at the age he's at now I expect Vardy to score goals at this level. He could be key for them.
Vardy has a year left on his contract. At 36 it could be his last. Nevertheless, he still has the nouse and experience to be a key player in a new Championship Leicester side.

I have a feeling that Ipswich will be the suprise team in the league this season provided they keep hold of McKenna.
I think he is a promising young manager who has been a coach for a long time and has had a good coaching education.
Ipswich also have a decent sized stadium with good average home attendances so the infrastructure is in place for a good season.

*Please feel free to save this post and remind me how little I know about football at the end of next season if they get relegated

Leicester's parachute payments belong to Macquarie, so they won't have the benefit of that income. They'll basically need the money from selling Maddison and Barnes to pay everyone else's wages next season. Then if they manage to sell 4 or 5 others, they'll have to bring in 13-14 players to replace those that have been sold or left on a free. The owners seem not to have the ability and/or the inclination to pump any further funds into the club, so they are really up against it in my opinion.
7 contracts ended after the weekend. 7 more have only a year left on their contracts. Barnes [a local lad], Maddison and possibly Evans could be three out the door fairly soon. Leicester have a huge commitment to pay for their state-of-the-art training facility and will see their income cut in half because of relegation. The parachute payments alone wont cover their financial obligations - so its fire sale time and a swift kick of the recruitment department to get their arz in gear. They have some young prospects but need experienced heads and a decent goalie. The Chairman is the son of the former owner and needs a a Director of Football to guide him and input a football brain into the boardroom. Interesting times for them.

Good post Roofie but the point I made earlier is that they have a loan secured against any parachute payments. Unless Macquarie decide to waive their rights to the parachute payment - and why would they? - Leicester won't receive that income.

Apparently they had a wage bill of £180m, although that will fall as a result of player contracts ending, player sales and some relegation clauses. Unless they get rid of 75% of the squad, I can't see them getting the wage bill down to, say, £50m, which would still be more than their income. And if they do sell everyone with any value, they would have to bring in at least 10 players, even if they had 5 or 6 youth prospects they are willing to promote.

I'm not ruling them out of automatic promotion, but the team which ends the transfer window will look nothing like the team which has been relegated.

This coming Championship season must be the strongest it's ever been with regards to the size of the clubs in the division.

I don't think it'll be the toughest, as there are still a lot of clubs in turmoil, however I don't think I've seen this division have so many 'big' clubs in it.

The PL has a good few small clubs now - but well run clubs. Luton, Brentford, Bournemouth, Fulham, Burnley, Brighton.

It will definitely be interesting to see how the 3 relegated clubs cope as all 3 could struggle. I think Leicester will lose the most players (they shouldn't have even been relegated looking at that squad on paper!)

All 3 will also have new managers in charge. Saints have gone with Russell Martin, and Leeds/Leicester have still yet to confirm a manager.

A lot of Yorkshire teams - if we are counted its 6 compared with only 3 from London area and 2 from Lancashire.

Its the biggest attendance wise Championship I can remember - 25k plus crowd clubs are Sunderland. Leeds, Leicester, Soton, Norwich, Ipswich, Sheff Wed, Boro, WBA - with Stoke, Brum, Coventry, Watford - possibles.
Watford's maximum capacity is 22k and probably less practically.

Have a bit of faith. Seems like you've already wrote us off?

There’s 3 teams you’d expect to compete come down, they’ll have all the financial clout/pulling power (I can see Giles going there, not far from Wolverhampton). Then there’s Watford & Norwich still with the benefit of parachute payments. Then there’s the likes of West Brom, Coventry, Millwall, Blackburn & Stoke I’d probably consider at a similar level to us. So that’s 9 sides we’d be competing with to finish up there assuming we beat the ‘fodder’, which in the Championship we all know isn’t a given.

I think we’ll be there or there abouts but it’s going to be a big ask. All depends on how our summer goes too.
