Carrick's "Managing your emotions" comment

A mate of mine who works and travels with the team was back in the pub with a pint in Teesside at 9:15pm, taking mick out of me for being sat on the train still coming through the midlands!

No excuses about tiredness for me.. we just got outfought and outran. Can’t afford anymore duff games. We need wins.

Did your mate play in the game on Saturday? Otherwise it's not really relevant is it. It's not traveling first class that's tiring, it's playing high intensity games, then having less time than the opposition to recover.

The poster assumed that Boro were leggy due to the travelling and the late night, that they’ll have got back well past midnight from Swansea and then would have had to make their way home, etc etc.

I was letting him know that’s not the case. The flight home was 45 minutes and they were home before 9.

Carrick and Lenihan both dismissed claims from journalists post Stoke that the reason they were off their game was due to fatigue.

Great article in the Gazette about it.. Carrick really does speak well doesn’t he
He does and he is right.

The fans aren’t robots though and those of more nervous or negative disposition will get twitchy when things are not going as hoped.

Not all like the fashion for playing out from the back, I was talking to a Stoke fan at work the other day and he hates it and blames Pep and Man City for this boring possession based style.

A bloke who sits behind me in the west upper shouted ‘that’s the ball’ the other night when somebody under pressure cleared it high and long from the back, not everybody likes every style of play.

I think there will also be a few around in the journalist circles who aren’t happy with the sudden resurgence of Boro under Carrick and will be looking to unsettle us somehow, we used to see a lot of that when Robson and McLaren were managers.

I know all fans won't like possession based football but those people need to understand that this is how Carrick wants us to play and this is what has got us results.

At Sheff United away we were playing out from the back and taking a few chances but it paid off and we passed them off the pitch eventually.

Groaning and shouting at the players to launch it into the channels isn't going to change the way we play, its pointless and it doesn't help the players.

If you want to watch centre backs launching the ball 60 yards into the corner flag you'd probably enjoy the Northern league a lot better.

I honestly don't think the 'playing out from the back' was the cause of any unrest of anxiety on Tuesday.

It's how you go about it and there was a distinct lack of urgency. Literally a minute to go and Steffen was strolling over to the corner flag to get a ball for a goal kick. that got a groan from the crowd. I don't think it was shouts and calls for 'pump it long, stop the tippy tappying'.. it was more of a 'come on lads ffs, where's the intensity! Get on with it!'.

The fans are desperate for success and want to see the lads doing EVERYTHING they can to win.

I'd also say there was a lot of noisy encouragement.. loud roars of 'come on' and 'come on Boro'.. I didn't hear any boos or serious grumbling.. just frustration at sloppy play, misplaced passes and lack of urgency.

Fans react to what they see.
The atmosphere was flat, so were the players.
Let's move on to PNE and a win.
