Care Home Help/Advice please

My dads in mid to late stage alzheimers and we're currently exploring other living options for him. He currently lives in a 4 bedroom home and has 2 x 30 minute visits a day from a carer to give him his medication/food etc.

The problem is, we don't want to just move him to a block of flats/sheltered accommodation - but at the same time he doesn't need the full on £1000 a week care (or whatever the figure is) - not by any stretch of the imagination.

He's in good physical health apart from the alzheimers and hes 69 year old. So we're looking at somewhere where he can live with other people and there's maybe activities/communal areas and stuff - and also certain care options if needed.

In a nutshell we need somewhere inbetween sheltered accommodation and a full bells and whistles care home.

Does anybody have any reccomendations/advice fot teesside area?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear that Dan. I don't have any answers unfortunately (live outside area) but I am also very interested in the answers for my mum.

I’m in a similar boat currently regarding both dad and mam. It’s difficult to navigate. Hope you get sorted.

I don't have any advice for the three of you, but I wish all of you the best. You really are in unenviable positions.

It's a horrible position to be in, having been there. We put Mam into the Willows near the JCUH. The staff were great and visiting is not restricted, which tells me they are open and transparent, except for meal times. I know it's a massive decision to make but eventually it will get too much. Mam would go walkabout and sometimes get violent towards Dad and he couldn't cope anymore. Good luck with finding somewhere and keep strong.

If he's deteriorating it may be best to get him straight into a Care Home - if you can get him to go. My Dad went downhill pretty fast and in the end there was no other option. We tried care at home with a company visiting 3 times per day to make meals, clean, etc. It wasn't long before he ended up back in hospital and went straight from there to the Care Home.

Have a google of extra care housing. Similar to sheltered housing in that you get your own flat with proper living space, proper tenancy agreement etc… but there is a CQC registered care company on site 24/7 who can deliver planned care but also respond to anything unexpected in a matter of minutes. In most schemes there is usually significant communal facilities, cafe etc… too.

I work in the office for a care agency mate. Does he not have a social worker or a CPN who can advise? As someone with mid to late stage alzheimers would normally have one of these. Maybe look at The Dunes in Redcar or Barnaby House in Eston. I would also consider what JaenBoro has said.

The McCarthy and Stone development @ Saltburn - Huntcliff Court?

There is a well used community room - manager there all the time - facilities are above average.

My auntie had a live in carer when she developed dementia, that her close relatives organised. If you have carers that visit they can come in.

The fees are quite high and the flats are not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I have a relative working long term at Barnaby House, I have never been, but she would recommend it. Its social housing - Thirteen?, residents have a refectory. Care is seperate like M & Stone.

I would advise checking places out for yourself - unfortunately social workers are under a lot of pressure to place people quickly. Every care home has inspection reports in the public domain.

My in laws were both put into care homes a few years ago as they couldn't cope but could but couldn't.. Father in law died over 3 years ago, mother in law still going. 300k later, house gone savings gone.

Do not ever use the "care" homes near Stanton

There are some near me that are small flats with assistance called Normamby court in marton. They also have other places.

If hes in mid to late stages of dementia then a care home is your only real option sheltered accommodation is not suitable at all as he will need round the clock care. As others have said dementia deterioration can come quickly at times so intermediary options aren't a great choice. My dad also had alzheimers he went into stainton lodge and the care was excellent.
