Coming back home for a few week visit and needing some advise in what mini type low compact car to rent. Opinions appreciated. Just will be one long trip from London up to Middlesbrough rest of the days been day trips and regular driving.

1. Ford Fiesta
2. Citroen
3. Volkswagen Golf
4. Ford Focus
5. Corsa
6. Polo
7. Peugeot 208

In my experience, they never give you the car your think you're booking anyway, especially at the Heathrow rental places. Be prepared for an aggressive attempt to fleece you for all sorts of extras too.

I always fly up to Newcastle these days, partly to avoid the long drive, but mainly to avoid the rental cowboys down south.

Don’t think I have ever received the exact make of car I thought I was booking not that it bothers me that much as long as it has four wheels and goes and isn’t too heavy on petrol.

we regularly hire cars for the dorset/boro trip, generally go for the smallest, cheapest ones going - usually a fiat 500 or a toyota aygo. love 'em both! we also use our own annual excess insurance, which costs about £30 a year.

Good call on the excess!
reduce my excess.com seem to have the best deals. Go for an annual.

Rental cars are expensive these days, I’m currently in Constance having flown into Zurich. Booked a vw golf for 5 days hire and it cost me about £400. (Actually gave me a ds4)

Nearly all new cars are decent nowadays and cost a lot to buy as well as hire.

A super mini size should cost £250 to £275 per week including taxes and insurance, but Heathrow may be an expensive place to rent. I would book in advance to get best deal and it gives you certainty.

I wonder if there's one of those 'you spend x% of your life' stats relating to time spent in an Enterprise office arguing why a Hyundai isn't a Ford Focus?

Thanks for this I have been quoted between $350 and $500 Canadian for 18 days which I think is one of hell of a deal through booking .com I'll just rent one of the cheapest that been the case and see what happens. I have in the past just used a local one in Guildford but their prices have gone up considerably hence my change of thought

The US is still a great place to rent a car. If you time it right you can easily get a deal for less than $20 a day.

Yeah they just give you whatever the **** they have. I ordered a little transit to move house in London having not driven for five years. They gave me an Abrams tank. And I didn't take the insurance. Take the insurance.

I picked one up today. Booked a Qashqai or equivalent, and was offered a Vauxhall Grandland or an Audi Q2. Pleasantly surprised to find that the indicators work on the Audi.
