Who wants to work with someone driving mechanical equipment whilst theyre stoned?....i wouldnt wanted to have.
The employer should be doing an education programme alongside the D & A testing, those with a problem using either should be able to declare and seek support - the employer should have this in a stand alone company policy, all employee's should be able to access it and be aware of what it means and what the process is both before and after testing.
a booklet and a poster campaign on notice boards should be made available, and a session included into the company induction programme.
ducking and diving, convincing yourself that its only weekend use, purging your urine, drinking copious amounts of fresh water and taking laxatives and so on and so forth will only lead to someone getting hurt, injured or worse.
and the % bet will be that its the person who is using.
good jobs are hard to come by, dont throw it away for the sake of a reefer or a beer- too much to lose - fail the test and you can leave your heart at the door, no excuse will be good enough, its facts that count.
the benchmark for dope is 28 days in the system, and if your drinking , its a count back of 1 full hour after your last drink, and then 1 full hour for each drink you had - so if you have 5 pints after work and the last drink is at 21:00, then its 22:00 + 5 hours - have a water drink or tea/coffee and go and empty your bladder before you set off for work, not after you have booked on.

People often raise this point in discussions like this but making a case for why some drugs are legal and others not is never done convincingly.
FFS just don't take illegal drugs.
They're illegal for a reason.

not quite accurate, a pint of larger ( average strength) contains 2 units of alcohol so it would be 10 hours after your last drink that the alcohol has left your system.

why would it be a grey area? It’s illegal here, makes absolutely no difference what it’s legal state is elsewhere. Whether it should or shouldn’t be is another matter but it is.
it would be like Adam Johnson trying to say the age of consent in another country is 14 or something and calling it a grey area. What does it matter?
I worked with a Dutch Contractor in the Shetlands and their workers hated it.
Testing was done every Monday morning and one of them volunteered to be tested. He's been on the puff all weekend and his wee just about set fire to the test kit.
TOTAL rules meant he had to go but his Employer simply 'offered counselling' and relocation. Anywhere but the Shetlands!
Abide by the rules where you work and you'll be OK.

It's not about the UK law vs other countries - it's about the employment contract
If the contract (or new addition to it) says the company have the right to test employees for drugs and sack those who fail, then that is what counts. Basically he is f*cked unless he abstains for 30 days and is not tested in the mean time...
He should start looking for another job

Perhaps he could explain to his wife and kids why they are suddenly on benefits and risk being homeless? Or why he would not be able to find another job because no one would take a risk on taking him on. Or perhaps he could have his regrets from a jail cell after someone has been killed at work because of a drugged up machine operator. FFS, even precription drugs have warnings on them about using machinery and driving.
Having worked in health and safety for over 20 years I have seen all of the above and worse.
Do you friend a favour Brian- tell him to get off the stuff.

I don't do drugs, but I would have thought driving after a joint is less dangerous than driving after 1 beer, though I have no idea.

Interesting I thought it was one hour per unit
so 5 pints of carling would take 12 hours from your first drink, assuming you drink more than 1 unit an hour
and drinking 5 pints of Peroni would be 15 hours until it’s out your system from your first drink. So start at 7 and you’ll likely be above the limit when you drive to work the next day

That said you can also fall foul of a road side drug swab many days after taking them. You could smoke a joint or a line on a Friday and fail a police drug swab on Monday.
So 'effectively' you ain't driving under any influence but you'd still lose your licence or worse get sent down for death by dangerous driving under the influence of drugs. The fact it was 4 days ago is irrelevant. I imagine so many people could fall foul of this after a weekend.
You heaven forbid kill someone in a crash you'll get drink and drug tested. Also cars are checked for undeclared mods for all those driving around with remaps etc.
Simply not worth it. Then again if you dabble then get a job where its fine like a rock star or DJ
