Canary Islands Advice please

Like the canaries we have quite a lot of windy weather.

It was the same for me this summer right up until about a week or so ago. I hate playing golf in the windy. I normally say I prefer not to play if it is 8 m/s or more. I was putting up with 10-12 m/s to try to keep cool when playing golf.

I’ve been to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura and I’d have to say the windiest holiday I’ve ever been on was in Ibiza.

In the aforementioned Canary Islands I’ve never had any holidays where I’ve thought ’this is too windy’. They’ve all been pleasant. 👍🏻

Just before covid hit we had breaks in Tenerife and Lanzarote. In the last 12 months we have been to Lanzarote twice and Gran Canaria. Virtually all of the time it was breezy to pretty windy. We have probably had only a few days of really windy weather there in those 5 weeks. Some of them on our most recent visit. So it can be a little hit and miss.

A few years back i went to a place called Puerto Calero in Lanzarote. There was a small marina with maybe 8 to 10 bars and restaurants. I think accommodation wise it was just villas. It was very very laid back and devoid of idiots 👍

I live almost half the year in Playa Blanca lanzarote, I’ve just come back from town, sitting outside having a glass of wine it‘s 9.00pm and 27 degrees. Sat outside last night until half eleven, this is in t shirt and shorts btw. There’s a gentle breeze (very light rustling of leaves) because PB is in the south the hills behind protect us from the wind.

Going through the suggestions above

Canyoudigit is not wrong.

Playa Mujeres, Lanzarote (It’s actually Punta Mujeres) is beautiful to visit, not touristy, but very very quiet, mostly local Spanish. When you hire a car deffo visit for the afternoon - but holiday…..

Corralejo, Fuertaventura - not for me, first time we went to visit (5 mile ferry ride from PB) we got the next ferry back. We went to see the world windsurfing championship there - there’s a reason they hold windsurfing championships there - Fuerteventura translates to strong wind. Fuerteventura in general the only place I’d go there is Puerta del Rosario and it’s quite small

Costa Teguise, Lanzarote. Three main resorts in Lanza all on the east coast: Costa Teguise, most northerly, as said above can be windy, been loads just to see why people go, don’t get it.

Puerta del Carmen, busy, lively, night clubs and Irish bars etc. If I was in my 20’s this is where I’d go.

Finally here in PB, there’s a beautiful marina, the town is 15 minutes walk from there which leads into the port area. Loads of nice bars and restaurant. For me the best bit is that if you walk from the marina at one end All the way to the other end of town it’s about three four miles with bars and restaurants but it’s sea front walkway all the way, no roads, no traffic, nowt and you can keep walking further past hotels and then open space for another four miles again all on a seafront walk no road. In January we had 27degrees for three weeks solid. There are also Sandy beaches.

Costa Adeje, Tenerife. Ok, didn’t mind it.

Not everyone will agree with me but that’s as I see it.
Think we are going to go to PB for a few days in December 👌🏻

Just returned from Corralejo in Fuerteventura yesterday - I hadn't been to the Canaries for about 35 years. We had lovely weather (25 degrees all week, with the odd shower). Fuerteventura isn't the most beautiful island in the world, owing to its volcanic nature and almost complete lack of anything green. Having said that we had a really fantastic holiday - I mountain biked out through the volcanoes to the West and then back over the North coast, which was stunning. There was lots of variety for things to do in the evenings and prices seemed really reasonable for food and drink, relative to Mallorca and Menorca where we have been in recent years.

Got back from Corralejo yesterday. The weather was glorious and I didn’t notice any wind, although there must have been some as there were plenty of kite surfers. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I found myself actually wanting the wind to build up a bit, on occasion, to help cool down at the beach and water park.
As we left the water park midweek, someone shouted 'Come on Boro' to my son who was in a shirt - wasn't your party by any chance?

Haha, no mate.
I didn’t see any boro tops but I did hear quite a few Geordie* accents while I was there though, so I may have been in your vicinity at some point.

*Apologies but, to me, all people from the North East Sound like Geordies. 😬

Puerto Calero is lovely, but a bit, well, limited I’d say. Nice little marina, twenty or so bars and pubs. I sail a bit and am often based there and it’s great for a few nights.

@Ingleby_Flash can you recommend some decent restaurants and bars to try in PB, and anywhere to avoid? We are staying at a beachside apartment for 3 nights in December, a couple of units over from a place called Indian Delights if that helps!

The best restaurant is Cassa Carlos which is the first place on the right as you walk into the marina from Dorada beach side, you might need to book, not the cheapest but the best food. Berrugo just inside the marina is cheap and cheerful but excellent food and service - usually full of locals, and us. Set back behind a little bar in town (called Contin) is an Italian called L’Artista, excellent pasta. Of the rest they’re all ok none stand out but all ok.

Avoid like the plague: Casa Roja in the marina, truly bad. We never go to Bria Marina on the front, but that’s about the service and attitude.

Re: transfers, a taxi looks to be loads - the host suggested a bus from the airport and back - we had a quote for shuttle bus transfers for 31 euros return for 2 - is that ok value or would we be better just public transporting it? Hand luggage only so fairly light travelling

Cheers!

31 euros return is good value. A taxi will be about 50 each way. Obviously we usually get a lift from mates but if we can‘t we use First Minute Travel, they’re more than 31 euros, but it’s door to door.

When you’re there taxis are dead cheap in PB and the no 30 bus runs from one end of the place to the other every 30 minutes and it’s a blanket fee of €1.40 pp per trip, we use it all the time, but they won’t take notes bigger than €10.

Cheers!

Public bus is an option if your arrival is a decent time. €3.30 each and runs every half hour mon to Fri until 22.30. (Every hour on a weekend)

I have just read that the Canary Islands will not be hit that much by storm Domingos. Did Ciarán do much down there?

Spoke to my mate who flew home yesterday after 3 weeks there and he says the weather was brilliant. We were there for the 4 weeks prior to that and it was just brutally hot, far hotter than is seasonal.

Glad to hear all is OK there.
We also had really good hot weather through to late October.

Not Canary Islands but might be worth including Funchal, madiera in your search. It really is a laid back, friendly, clean, safe place
