Burnley today for the traditionalists

As far as I recall, the original 1 to 11 numbering only worked properly with the 2-3-5 formation.

2 and 3 were full backs, 4, 5 & 6 were the half backs in front of them (which is why 5 was the "centre half") and 7 through 11 were the forwards.

7 and 11 were the wingers, 8 and 10 the inside forwards, 9 was the centre forward.

Trying to fit the numbers into a 4-4-2, 4-3-3 etc will always involve some re-arrangement/re-ordering of the numbers.

Great stuff, that's exactly how I'd have them numbered, full backs 2 and 3, wingers. 7 and 11. 5 and 6 at the back was how we numbered them when we first played 4-4-2, with 4 and 8 in the middle and 9 and 10 up top.

You'd be able to have a sweep every week if that happened, one of the daft changes that's happened over the years.
