Bringing in new players more challenging than thought?

The signing was just a money making signing from the get go. I have seen they expect ten million next season if Leeds want to buy and if they get that its a profit. Good business signing really but these are the type of signings are annoying to see really.

You're right, seems to be how clubs like Chelsea and Man City operate, hoover up promising young talent, loan them out and flog them at a profit if deemed not good enough for the top levels of the Premier League. This is why they need to bring in those restrictions on loaning players asap to stop this. It's shafting players in the academy system too.

Chelsea have employed this model for some seasons. It’s a business in its own right.

I accept it is always going to be a challenge to move to the North. However, you look at our infrastructure- trading facilities, ground, management and we do have a lot to offer. Plus Warnock knows what he is doing. It is just we don’t have the mega wages to offer anyone anymore. And not wrongly in my opinion.

Its a similar thing to what Chelsea(and others) have been doing for years. Hoovering up young players from lower leagues and abroad. Some will never get near the first team. Stick them out on loan and sell them on at a fat profit as they have Chelsea on their CV. Bamford was a prime example of that

Players don't really want to go anywhere. They will typically play for whoever will give them the most money. There will be a small few that would be willing to be paid less to play for the team they support but only if it isn't significantly less. Anyone that is unaffiliated with us will have no reason for coming here over another club that pays more. If we match wages then I think we still struggle on location. If we get past that then I think we do have an advantage because our facilities are top notch. For most players though we won't get to the point of impressing them with our facilities if we aren't paying them as much as another team would.

Welcome back

This not wanting to move to the North East keeps being wheeled out and it's absolute baloney. We have enticed some of the best players in the world to this club, this area, as have Newcastle and Sunderland. Top players moved to Blackburn when they were doing well. Burnley isn't exactly Monaco, yet they still manage to sign players.

Pay them a decent wage and they'll go anywhere.

Genuinely, which are the best players in the world that Sunderland have enticed?

Absolutely. I've pointed out plenty of times that players will often live in Harrogate anyway, often voted as the best place to live in England and within easy striking distance of Leeds.

The way some go on you'd think we were insisting on them moving to Pallister Park (no offence to residents of that area of course).

For people on a good wage, such as footballers then the north east is a great place to live.
At the boro they can live anywhere from york/harrogate going south, upto newcastle and still be within an easy drive to the ground/training.
Houses cost less, good schools great countryside and a quality of life those living close to London cannot match. I think its why some players come and don't want to leave the area.

You can see what is happening in the market, Friend and Johnson still not signed, how long is their offer on the table for? the fact its a while now and they still have not signed on, suggests they are looking at what's out there.

Young players from down south or abroad aren't always interested in nice places to live or good places to raise a family etc. They are young and have loads of cash so it's more likely they want a big city with bars/clubs, things to do, transport links and a bit of anonymity. They can get that in London or Manchester, not so much in Harrogate, York or Middlesbrough. At least that is the impression they will have even if it isn't true.

For most people a move on the same wage up north would give the opportunity to have a bigger house and more space etc but they have so much money they can get that even in London. Perversely we have to offer more money for the low cost of living area than the clubs in the desirable areas do.

I could well imagine that many of our players see Middlesbrough less than 30 times a year, and then only to the ground for the game then off. The same as many supporters.

Attracting players from anywhere else has never been a problem when the money is right.

Great post. Sums up how I feel generally aswell

Not many deals done in the Championship - most players on holiday still and then quarantine if they have gone to Spain.. Div 1 and 2 have just starting sorting out budgets. The Premiership just finished some clubs still playing Euro tournaments. It really a normal June. I will start getting itchy at the beginning of next week if there has been no movement.

A player can buy a large luxury detached house in its own grounds in North Yorkshire for £750,000, opposed to £2.5m in a good part of South East (someone on £10k a week on a 3 year contract) could struggle to get a £2m mortgage. I would guess they take out 10 year mortgages so the monthly payments may be too much too. So if they want a nice house with land, North Yorkshire may have a draw.

It is much quieter in North Yorkshire and someone from a large city who is single etc might find that difficult, while someone with a young family might find it beneficial. The players will just go to Middlesbrough for games and to do community duties. Its the same for players at clubs like Spurs the players will live 20 miles in the Countryside or a very fashionable area of London and go to Tottenham for games only.

Money makes a difference - there are flights Teesside to London every day, but if you fly a lot it adds up. Years ago my parents used to take Ken Wolstenholme from Ayresome Park to Teesside Airport after he done a Boro game, paid by Tyne Tees TV. It was just a commute to him like going to Reading from London. Another example Mo Salah goes to the Ritz Hotel in London regularly after a Liverpool home game.

It was probably tougher for players in the 1980s when they could not afford weekly flights and there was no internet and they could not afford to live in the best areas and they had to live more like common people.
