Brighton and Bournemouth

We have a good fan base, a reasonable stadium and a Chairman who still invests in the club. Why can't we operate to the same successful business methods of Brighton and Bournemouth?

Because they’re on the south coast, and Brentford are in London.

I think people often forget how hard it is to sell Middlesbrough to a player who has his pick of clubs. Unless we’re paying above average wages, they’re going to move south. It’s the same with Newcastle.

Ifs and buts and coconuts

It is not like for like regardless of how similar size of clubs etc

So many differences both tangible and intangible you can never compare 2 clubs.

Pointless even trying

They're only in Boro 25 times a year, and then only to play a match.

This down south thing is over played by fans

I've long thought that closer proximity to Gatwick and Heathrow is an enormous factor if you're wanting family to come and visit from a foreign country/travel home to see them.

As much as I love the north east, were I a very rich young man with a lot of afternoons off, I would certainly like the idea of being able to shop and eat in London because I had a couple of spare hours.

It's a combination of luck and poor decision making from Gibson. His judgement is poor.

Feels like we're on the right track with Scott calling more of the shots (despite the season so far) but you always worry Gibson will lose patience tear it up and start again as he has so many times before.

I don't remember Brentford, Bournemouth or Brighton particularly beating us to signings when we were in the same division.

And didn't Bournemouth actually spend loads more than us when they went up under Howe?

Which is odd given players were apparently queuing up to get paid less for the privilege of playing for a Southern club.

Agreed, it's massively overstated.

I believe the North / South thing is a massive problem for us. Look at Watford last week. how many of their team would sign for us. When a agent touts a player between Boro or a decent SE bases team. I believe most players would opt for the SE.

I heard it mooted in the past (I think for other northern clubs), but how would you feel about the club having their training ground and headquarters within the M25 somewhere and only travelling to the stadium on match days? As has been said, the players only need to be at the stadium on about 30 days a year.

Would we lose anything as a club by being geographically isolated for training etc?

They only thing that sways it is money.
But isn't that sort of the point? If both offers are identical financially, but one is next to a large cosmopolitan city where there's better transport links for your family etc. then that's a benefit. If we then have to pay more to sign the player to make up for that, we're losing out.

I get the location thing but the question was around the running of the club. With their recruitment including managers and the whole set around the clubs they seem to operate on a more sustainable level than many other clubs with larger resources

Exactly this. I love Boro, but if I was a professional footballer and either Bournemouth or Brighton came in for me. I’d be going there. It’s a better quality of life.

Guarantee if you ask most professional footballers whether they’d rather live in the North East or down South, they’d pick the south.

Actually, ask most people. I moved further south and wouldn’t move back to the North East now. There’s nothing there.

Just because you look down your nose at the north doesn't mean everyone feels that way.

I know plenty of southerners who have moved and love it in the north.

Bad enough southerners talking us down without northerners doing it too.

I go all over the country at times for work.

I always love being back in the North and North East in particular. Give me less busy roads, less people and the feeling of being out of the London dominated thinking.

For example, I was in Abingdon and Oxford last week. Both nice places, but I much prefer York to Oxford, and Durham to Abingdon.
