Brentford?

What happened to the “Brentford Model” we were told was the way to go?
Same way as Swansea, Bolton............
The "Brentford Model" got them promoted and has kept them in the Premier league despite a stadium size of 17K. They were the 4th most profitable team in the Premier league last season and have made a profit 3 years in the last 5. They will probably survive another season in the Premier league despite losing the star striker for most of the season.

If we were even a fraction as well run as Brentford we would be challenging for Europe in the Premier league instead of scratching around painting go-faster stripes on Luke Ayling and wondering why we bought Hoppe.

Certainly not time to knock the Brentford model because of a few bad results this season.

They are an impressive club.

It's great what they have done.

I admire them for standing by their manager who took 4 points from his first 10 games in charge. If we did that, we'd still have fans holding it against him, claiming he's papering over the cracks 6 successful years later.

But no one can sustain that forever. Some time in the next 3-4 years, they'll be relegated. What they, and Brighton do is very difficult, that's what makes their success impressive.

When, inevitably for clubs Nov their size, the bullet works it's way around, it will not invalidate the system they have used to achieve success.

I don't disagree with you, but what actually defines "size"? Is it financial? Is it attractiveness (ie pulling power) to managers & players? Is it historic? Is it size of supporter base?

for me, its all about somehow making that transition from being a 'showcase & sell' club, to a club players want to go to. there are elite clubs, but they do change every now & then for various reasons, ie forest, man city, leeds etc

Finance probably is key: a club with a 17k stadium will always be at a disadvantage competing with clubs with 50k+ attendance.

As for show case and sell, I think there are maybe 6 clubs in Europe who aren't that sort of club. All that changes is who you're buying from and who you're selling to.

Which club's players wouldn't routinely want to go if Real came knocking? Very few. Everyone else is showcase and sell

Brentford dont actually follow 'The Brentford Model' themselves anymore. Not the version that is discussed on here anyway.
When was their last big sale? Marcus Forss to us was probably one of them.

I thought that was the Brighton ‘model’ … the Brentford model is supposedly the moneyball approach isn’t it?

God knows. I know people talk about it as buying cheap then selling for massive profits. Which Brentford did for a while before getting promoted - but not since.

I'm not a Moneyball expert but after watching the movie my understanding was it is about buying previously overlooked players that have a specific skill or skill set that fits in with the overall team. Even if they do have two left feet and an attitude.

That’s about it yeh! Buy characteristics suited for your team regardless of other negatives - I think.

I think Brentford even had the moneyball fella (Beane) as a consultant - this might have been during the promotion years, potentially may have ‘out grew’ that model now 🤷🏻‍♂️
