Brazil elections

The worry I had was that bolsonaro tried to hijack the use of the iconic Brazil football shirt ( like trump and the flag) and with it being titled cup year. That is a powerful image in Brazil.

Thankfully not

Bolsonaro will undoubtedly be sounding out the military, police and other state organisations to see if he can mount a coup. USA will probably be on board with it.

Why would the us be on board with it ?

Biden has already congratulated Lula and there is no reason for the us to prefer bolsonaro . For one thing , he’s the Brazilian version of trump . It also sets a bad precedent if the Brazilian trump is allowed to do it .Why would the Americans want trump to attempt again to overthrow a democratically elected government ?

I’m very pleased Lula has won,If only by the smallest of margins. It’s very important that we maintain losers consent in a democracy.Something those who wouldn’t accept the Brexit referendum should adhere to.

US will not want a leftist in charge of any country, especially a large one like Brazil. All they want is access for their corporations and Bolsanaro is by far the better bet for that.

Why would the US want to overthrow a democratically elected government. Good one :D

A lot of the governments the yanks overthrew were dictatorships , not democracies .

I can’t envisage the Americans would care if a government was social democratic (centre left ) or socialist ( hard left ). Being far left (communist) would be a problem , but then it would be a problem for the Brazilians .

A centre left to left wing candidate is much safer for the world than some far right d*ckhead who doesn’t care if the amazon is destroyed

Glad Bolsonaro is leaving, but it is a shame that he's being replaced by somebody who's seemingly daft enough to buy in to pro-Russian reasons for the invasion of Ukraine and blaming Ukraine and the West for it.

Not great news in that regard, but neither of them had a reasonable position on it, so it was a lose lose.

I suppose that interview was released in May, so it's possible his position has changed since then, but given that's already after widespread Russian atrocities, I'm not hopeful.
He just sounds incredibly naive.

When you vote for a politician you know which political you're getting. People voted for Brexit without knowing what Brexit would look like, because we didn't know, and we were told by leaving we would set our own course and be free of the EU manacles without exactly saying how or why it would be better or how much it would cost.

Both types of campaigns have lies and exaggeration but at least you know who you are voting for.

Coupled with all the stuff about data targeting, the leave campaign saying should be a rerun if it's only a small margin plus the fact that it's been an unmitigated disaster all doesn't really help. It's happened but we are in the toilet as a result, and we have this current shower of politicians in charge largely because they championed it on top of their core voter base.

Well it looks like enough police believe in democracy there - and the attempts at a 'coup' are seemingly thwarted
They'd been camping outside military institutions demanding they intervened too - that hasn't happened either
UK US and elsewhere all back Lula and condemn the actions today

I know brexitists don't understand much. But to spend 7 years not understanding what an adivsory referendum means must be a new ignorance record!

And guess who's been advising Bolsonaro? Steve Bannon. That c*** must think he's Lex Luthor.
If any **** needs dealing with, it's this ****. He's dangerous. I thought he'd been convicted of some crimes in the US, but his clammy, fascist hand still seems to be able to stir ***** up.

The sentences in the US for armed insurrection have been pathetic - especially when compared to the harsh sentences usually doled out in that country. It's an invite for every loon in camouflage trousers to try and get their jackbooted daddy figure back in power. Charge them with treason. Shoot the *******. They're all right wing. They would probably enjoy it.
