Branthwaite’s assault

Chris it wasn't a poor decision, it was rank bad, a dereliction of duty, one that could have back fired really badly if the players had over reacted to the challenge.

It had no place on a football pitch, albeit accidental.

I agree, was speaking more generally though.

Referee's need to be more publically scrutinised and accountable, the standard is so poor and getting worse.

Though more needs to be done to encourage referee's of the future into the game.

If it is the right kind of people coming into ref, but they cannot go on being protected from above. There is nothing wrong in telling someone they are poor at something, they will never learn otherwise and will carry on making the same mistakes.

what about instant yellow if the foot goes above the shoulder, worked in hockey, with the bats, not the feet

The referee should apologise to Fry, and also apologise to Middlesbrough Football club as his incompetence certainly cost us the game and may have cost us a play off place. The referee’s lack of any expression of remorse smacks of arrogance.

The ref is incompetent there can be no doubt about that but I do think something should be done about the player as well.

I agree he didn’t deliberately try to kick Dael Fry’s head off but it’s a certain level of recklessness to try to kick the ball at head height in the penalty area (on that subject I also think overhead kicks are dangerous). Fry is a tall bloke and yet still caught the boot full in the face.

It would be good if the FA confirmed they had written to Blackburn or the player about dangerous play resulting in a head or facial injury just to know that some action had been taken. Maybe they have, maybe they haven’t but hasn’t Warnock said that Fry still has blurred vision?

It‘s left a bad taste for me, you don’t watch football to see players almost lose an eye without knowing the football authorities have acknowledged and done something about it.

I know the ref has to see it to give it (hard to believe he saw nowt) but he must’ve seen no great stoop down by Fry, then he’s got a size nine impression on his face, surely you can conclude........ or maybe the linesman was looking generally in that direction 🤷‍♂️ Hard to fathom.

Suprised he's not had some kind of retrospective punishment. The ref didn't give anything (so take it he's not seen it). So he can be punished as no yellow or other action taken.

You'd think dangerous play at the very least.

Maybe they took into account that he's a young boy, a strong wind could knock him over, playing a man's game, doing what he's asked to do, and errr... he's from Carlisle or Cockermouth or somewhere.

Looks like he reffed at MK Dons on Tuesday but can't see him on list for this weekend

Yes he did - I was outraged by that, but the appointment had been announced at the same time as our game, so I guess they couldn't pull him from the MK Dons game even if they wanted to (which they clearly don't).

He's fourth official at Derby this weekend - is fourth official a demotion or do refs all take their turns doing it? Or is the punishment having to watch a Derby match?

Its events like this that disenchant me so much about football today. A game I love both playing and spectating. A defender can rip the shirt off the back of a forward in the penalty area and get away with it, a nudge sends a player sprawling and receives a yellow card. A good referee should go unnoticed! Arrgghh!!!!

Retrospective action cannot be taken if the referee saw the incident and decided no action was necessary.

Therefore we can assume that the ref did indeed see it and thought there was no need to take any action.

And if you are right, which seems likely, just how bad is that?
