Both vaccines not enough

It never will be enough will it?

We were told the vaccines were the way out of this. First vaccinating the 9 priority groups, then the over 50s, then over 40s, now all adults and the goalposts have been shifted to all kids.

Then what happens? Booster jabs for the Autumn. Now it’s all about long covid. Just the other day a poll found that 26% of respondents believed nightclubs should be closed indefinitely, are we also going to do away with all music and sport events too? If you continue to wear masks, wash your hands, avoid social contact and have had both jabs, you have given yourself the maximum possible protection. Unless you want to spend the rest of your life at home, which frankly wouldn’t surprise me with some individuals.

Questions have still not been answered regarding when it is safe to return to normal, the proper normal. Zero cases and deaths? Which are simply impractical. It scares me that there are people who are nonchalant about having some form of restrictions for the rest of their lives and want ‘Big Brother’ to decide what’s best for them rather than taking their own decisions and judgement despite learning about this virus.

There will also be threats of new variants, getting sick despite being vaccinated, just like there is a threat of you being hit by a car tomorrow. You only live once, go out and enjoy it.
It's never been about getting to zero and eradicating it because unless that's done on a global scale then it simply won't work.
If we want some normalcy back then we need to drive down the infection rate to a point where any outbreaks can be spotted early, managed and contained.
Despite our vaccination numbers we are foolhardy to just let it rip right now because of the potential of long covid and creation of new variants. Low case rates and high vaccination levels to help mitigate any illnesses is the way to go. Unless a vaccine gives 100% immunity then you can't allow cases to be of a scale where you can't control them.
This arbitrary date is meaningless and more spin than anything. If we undo nearly two years of suffering by this reckless abandonment of leadership then what is the point? Living your life regardless and living your life responsibly are two very different things.

Agree with the majority of that, but changes can be made to our lifestyle that have no negative impacts on us, masks, regular testing, isolating if positive and good hygiene certainly won’t stop cases but will reduce the spread. If those measures are mandatory for an indefinite amount of time would that be such a bad thing?

There was a poll here a week or so ago, and over 80% of the population do not expect us to go back to pre covid normality, its just not going to happen. I guess we have been insulated from the worst effects of this awful epidemic, and have been able to get on with our lives with the minimum amount of disruption. A lot of people, when asked if/when the borders should be opened again, are asking why?

There is talk here of building permanent MIQ facilities, for use for this pandemic and also for future pandemics. The new 'normal' here will be restrictions, not on what we can do, but how we move about, travel covid passports etc. It might harm certain parts f our economy in the short term, but they are already investigating how we can diversify away from those areas that rely solely on tourism for their income.

We'll see, but one thing people are not talking about here is going back to normal. I accept, and understand, that travel to see my family is going to be pretty difficult in future, and may well include 14 days in MIQ that I will have to pay for myself as I took the decision to leave the country for a holiday. More difficult as I now have a younger daughter who is really missing family and is determined to move back to the UK in December.

Who are these people that don't want to return to normal. I keep seeing this bandied about by the anti-vax covid-hoax conspiracy wonks but I've yet to see anyone actually state that as being their position.

EVERYONE wants to get back to normal as soon as possible. The fact that some people are seeing "soon" as being straight-away whilst the health and virus experts are suggesting "soon" might be a few years is where the problems are coming from.

If we hadn't had people taking the "You only live once, go out and enjoy it." attitude, we would be a lot closer to normality.

Every variant sets us back.

It will only take one particularly unexpected variant to set us back to square one (the Delta variant came very close). The goalposts shift as the information changes. That's just science, I'm afraid.

Out of interest, do you always cross roads without looking, or do you take precautions?

I think this came at possibly the worst time it could have done politically.

The world is going through an authoritarian right-wing anti-science phase (part of the reason for the virus not being picked up sooner was Trump removing the pandemic response units).

If this had hit 20 or even 10 years ago, we'd probably have it in hand worldwide by now.

As it is we just have to look at the UK, USA, Brazil, Turkey and India to see how not to deal with a pandemic.

It must be difficult feeling isolated from family and friends but at least you have a government that's taking it seriously.

Plus the benefit of a far more capable cabinet ( and opposition ) which even going back to Maggie would have taken it by the scruff of the neck and taken decisions that HAD to be made whether they were ’popular’ or not .
If you didn’t like it ? ………….TOUGH !

just imagine where you would be if you got a bad case of covid without having both jabs.

lockdowns, vaccines, and all precautions are there to manage the risk, nothing can wipe the risk out.

the number of covid cases is no longe the top line figure people should be looking at, it's all about hospitalization and death, keep them down and life can move on

Just a heads up, I have had both vaccines and followed all the covid advice so I naturally thought I was low risk, well unfortunately it got me this week I am not sure how, where or when.

Anyway I was thinking if I ever did get this it would be only mild but I was mistaken, this virus is a beast, I hope to turn the corner soon but having made me feel this ill I can only thank everybody behind the vaccination effort for giving my body a fighting chance, I am not overweight and above average fitness for my age, it does not seem to matter once this virus gets hold as a I can barely drag myself out of bed....stay cautious guys.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

Update
I will use this as my last post if my recovery continues.

having spent 23 hours of the last 24 in bed on day four with a burning fever it's a huge relief to wake this morning feeling much brighter, in summary the last four days have been 37.9/ 38.5 fever mostly the top end, not eating as the sickness feeling was very strong, 4 lbs weight loss, zero energy, bad head and a niggling cough.

I am not posting for sympathy I am posting for educational purposes ( sorry if that offends its not my intention)
As I have outlined I am fit and healthy normally with both jabs. I will be in self isolation for the full 10 days my plan is to kill this virus of myself and not let another soul be infected because of my actions, I have removed myself from my wife and daughter for obvious reasons.

So that's a shortened version of the last four days, I had to write this because last night I was convinced I would be going to hospital this morning, my breathing was laboured my temperature was wild combined with very fast heart palpitations, hopefully this is not a false dawn and hopefully my recovery is rapid and complete.

with the cases rising so quickly I feel sure someone reading this will at some point catch this virus, I thought it was worth sharing my experience because being infected having had both vaccines my experience didn't match my expectations, I was expecting mild symptoms but that really wasn't the case,I will be totally frank last night I thought this virus would be the end of me, if you do get this virus it's so restrictive on your life and liberty work and socialising but having been through this myself the biggest satisfaction is knowing this unwanted invader is going to die with me, I will not pass this on and in a funny way it almost feels like it's been worthwhile.

I hope this may help anybody who goes through this and reinforces the need to stay cautious even if you have had the vaccines, thanks for all your good wishes☝.

Best wishes Fridgeman and I’m glad you’re coming out of it . It doesn’t bear thinking about how it might of manifested itself if you hadn’t had the two jabs !
Therein may lie a lesson for anyone in two minds about having the jabs .

Ex workmate of mine recently died of covid after being double jabbed. People commented he was a big bloke and that is as bad as Blojobs comment about over 80 year olds. Actually he was a similar stature to B.J but older. 1 death is too many whoever it happens to.

The most annoying phrase around this whole pandemic now.

Just plays right into the government's propaganda.
I agree.

Learning to live with it actually means letting it rip through the population, vaccinated or not. Letting people die of it and crucially letting hundreds of thousands of people get really poorly. And whilst these people are getting sick it's illegal for them to go to work so it also cripples business.

This isn't learning to live with it, it's giving up as they have messed up every opportunity to learn to live with it before this.
