Boro's best ever defender, IMHO mind

I thought you’d pick our willie mr E and you didn’t let me down

I’ve mentioned before but at primary school one day our teacher who was related to him brought in a bag of all his England caps ( sadly as we know they weren’t full international ones) but I can still remember them with their tassels on the top and the country he faced written on them.

Yes, he was just so good he was quite flawless most games. His understanding with Boam was phenomenal.
But we have been so lucky to have many gifted centre back pairings in our time Erimus, as stated above Ugo and Southgate, Pallister and Mowbray. Pearson was a phenomenal presence as well. Woodgate made it look easy. And amazing to think that at one time Chris Riggott could not get in our team. Did injury prevent him for reaching the very top also.
I hope Dael Fry once fit can learn from Sol Bamba when they both eventually play together. Because both those players could easily join our greats list.

Homourable mention for Steve Vickers.
Not suggesting he was our best ever but he was Mr Connsistent in a highly competitive Premier League.

Some great players already listed. We’ve recently had some high class international defenders, albeit for relatively short periods:
Huth
Festa
Ziege

Maddren for me too, though

The promotion season and the first season back in the 1st division must have been some of the best football that Maddren played. As mentioned above, a great understanding with Boam and always kept a cool head.

I always liked Festa, he certainly wasn't as good as Maddren but always gave 100% and could be cynical in that Italian way when needed.

I've been watching Boro since 1990, so Alan Kernghan was the first 'major' centre half i remember watching as Mogga had just moved on. Since then my first choice is undoubtedly Woodgate.

Pogatetz was quality ugo king gareth woodgate Pearson mogga pallister huth etc all brilliant defenders, but madren was top quality,he could play anywere on the pitch ,i think he even started centre forward in a couple of games aswell.

Big Richard, he was a forward converted to a centre back I believe.
