Middlesbrough disappointment at Marcus Tavernier's imminent Bournemouth move
Teesside Live understands Boro were determined to keep Tavernier on Teesside this summerMiddlesbrough officials are understood to be disappointed at Marcus Tavernier's imminent move to Bournemouth, with the club having done all they can to keep the talented midfielder on Teesside.
Though they were aware of Premier League interest this summer, Boro were determined to keep Tavernier at the club, with Chris Wilder planning to build his team around the 23-year-old.
But it's understood that Tavernier's representatives made it clear that the midfielder wanted the Bournemouth move and pushed for the switch. Boro are understood to have offered Tavernier a new deal this summer and sources tell Teesside Live the club "couldn't have done anymore" to keep the midfielder on Teesside.
But with Tavernier determined to push through the Bournemouth move, Boro reluctantly accepted the Cherries' offer. Reports on Wednesday evening claimed Tavernier was set for a medical at Bournemouth today, with the move expected to be confirmed before the end of the week. Tavernier won't be part of the Boro squad for the Championship opener against West Brom.
Aware of Premier League interest in Tavernier, while doing all they can to keep the midfielder, Boro recruitment chiefs and staff are understood to have planned for his potential departure as best as possible.
The recruitment team are still working around the clock to strengthen the squad, with the confirmed arrival of Marcus Forss a big boost. Boro are looking to bring in two more strikers, with midfielders now also on the to-do list on the back of Martin Payero's loan exit and Tavernier's imminent departure.
