Manager is shown door two hours after home win
'Time is right for a change' with Boro a point from the top
Middlesbrough last night sacked Gareth Southgate in a shock move that the club chairman, Steve Gibson, admitted was "the hardest decision I've had to make in football". It came straight after Southgate oversaw Boro's 2-0 home victory against Derby County that left them fourth in the Coca-Cola Championship, a point behind the leaders.
..........but Gibson added: "The time is right for change and that change has had to be made."
"Gareth has given Middlesbrough Football Club magnificent service as a skipper and, in very difficult circumstances, as manager," said Gibson. "I appointed Gareth in a situation that was greatly unfavourable to him. He deserves another opportunity once he has had the chance to rest and refresh himself."

Manager leaves with team two points above relegation

October is clearly a dangerous month for Middlesbrough managers. Almost a year to the day since Gareth Southgate was sacked by Steve Gibson, the struggling Championship club's chairman tonight announced that Gordon Strachan had torn up his contract and walked away from the Riverside without compensation.
.......Southgate left Boro one point off the top of the table but after winning 13 of 46 games under Strachan, whose appointment has proved little short of disastrous, are two points shy of a relegation place and have suffered their worst start to a league campaign for 20 years. Boro have declined dramatically in the four and a half years since Steve McClaren took his side to the Uefa Cup final against Sevilla in Eindhoven.
........Having made a big mistake this time last year Gibson will now take time to consider his next managerial choice...........

Tony Mowbray sacked because Steve Gibson feared Boro relegation fight
Boro chairman Steve Gibson identified a lack of drive and purpose from the players and has also been disappointed by the impact made by some signings
Boro chairman Steve Gibson and Tony MowbrayTony Mowbray was sacked because Steve Gibson feared the club would be dragged into a relegation dogfight. Boro’s poor start to the current campaign plus their horrendous form over the second half of last season cost the manager his job just five days before the third anniversary of his appointment.
Boro have won just two league fixtures out of 12 so far this season and were eliminated from the Capital One Cup at the first round stage by League Two strugglers Accrington. Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at rock-bottom Barnsley proved to be the last straw for Gibson, who was believed to be close to sacking Mowbray in the week preceding the crucial 4-1 victory over Yeovil.
The loss at Oakwell leaves Boro in 16th in the Championship, 10 points adrift of the top six and just four ahead of third-bottom Barnsley, who climbed off the bottom thanks to their weekend win.
At the Riverside, Boro have won just four league games in total this year including just one this season.Away, the picture’s even worse with just one Championship win on the road in 2013 and a total points haul of six out of a possible 51. That comes on the back of a poor finish to last season. Boro started well and were briefly top in November but a New Year slump saw the club drop to 16th, their lowest league finish since 1990. Boro only won three of their final 21 fixtures, picking up just 12 points out of a possible 63.
Middlesbrough sack manager Karanka
Middlesbrough sack manager Aitor Karanka, with the club in the Premier League relegation zone.

Aitor Karanka: Middlesbrough sack manager after three and a half years
Boro are winless in their last 10 Premier League games and currently sit in the relegation zone, three points from safety with 11 games remaining.
They are also the league's lowest scorers with just 19 goals and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City last weekend.
Karanka has won just 15% of his games in the Premier League, with four wins, 10 draws and 13 defeats. His win rate in the Championship was 52%.
Goals have been hard to come by, despite the £7m signing of Aston Villa striker Rudy Gestede in January and they have scored just three goals in their last 10 league games.
In addition to scoring the fewest goals in the league this season, they have also attempted the fewest shots on target with just 65.
Boro spent over £20m in the summer, as they brought in midfielder Marten de Roon for £12m, along with wingers Adama Traore for £7m and Viktor Fischer for £3.8m.
It was reported that Karanka walked out of the Riverside last March following a row, but returned a few days later.
This season he criticised the board over a lack of January signings and also hit out at the fans' behaviour after a 3-1 defeat by West Ham in January, saying the players deserved more respect. However, that's not to say the signs weren't there. Just last week BBC Tees Sport learned of a training ground bust-up between Karanka and Stewart Downing, who was frustrated at not being selected for the trip to Stoke.
That was the latest in a long line of fall-outs, from criticising the fans to the board and just last weekend Karanka said Downing, and new signing Patrick Bamford, lacked "fight" after leaving them both out of the match-day squad.
Karanka will always be remembered as the manager who got Boro promotion back to the Premier League after seven years in the wilderness.

Boro are ninth in Championship, three points out of play-off places
Monk leaves Riverside after just over six months in charge
Garry Monk applauds the visiting fans at Hillsborough after Middlesbrough’s 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. Hours later he was relieved of his job.
Given that Monk spent around £50m in the summer transfer market there have long been concerns over the team’s mediocre record of only 10 wins in 23 Championship games this season.
Steve Gibson, the club’s owner, is understood to have come to the conclusion that Monk was not, after all, the man to lead Boro back into the Premier League and, following a series of in-depth conversations with the 38-year-old during the past week, reluctantly decided that a change of manager was imperative.
Monk: “It’s taken a bit longer than I hoped and expected but the players that I inherited had had one system drilled into them for three years and it’s not easy to change the style.”
Although Gibson is rightly noted as one of the most supportive and loyal club owners in English football, such an ostensibly ruthless act is not without precedent on Teesside.
After all, back in 2009, he sacked Gareth Southgate following a midweek 2-0 home win over Derby County which left Boro fourth in the Championship. After being informed of his dismissal with midnight approaching, the current England manager was left to drive back to his home in North Yorkshire in a state of shock.

The former Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion manager has left the Teessiders
"Middlesbrough FC can confirm that the contract of manager Tony Pulis will not be extended."
Boro appointed Pulis as Garry Monk's successor on Boxing Day 2017 as the club sought a return to the Premier League, having been relegated earlier that year.
This season saw Middlesbrough finish seventh, just one point outside the playoffs, with the joint-best defensive record in the division alongside promoted Sheffield United.
Pulis leaves Boro with a record of 35 wins, 22 draws and 23 defeats, giving him a win percentage of 43.8%. Monk's was 46.2%.
Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson said: "I'd like to thank Tony for his hard work and commitment over the past 18 months. He has been a joy to work with and a complete gentleman."

Middlesbrough SACK Jonathan Woodgate
Boro chairman Steve Gibson has acted decisively in the wake of Saturday's disastrous 3-0 home defeat to Swansea City, which left the Teessiders just one position above the relegation zone.
Woodgate is understood to have arrived at the training ground as usual this morning, only to be immediately informed of the club's decision. He then his goodbyes and left.
Warnock will take over immediately, and is set to take charge of training this afternoon ahead of Boro's trip to Stoke City on Saturday.
At this stage, his initial remit is to keep Boro in the Championship over the next eight games, with his long-term future likely to be discussed as events unfold.

Neil Warnock: Middlesbrough part company with veteran manager
Boro dropped to 15th in the table after a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns and have won just six games this season.
Veteran manager Warnock succeeded Jonathan Woodgate in June 2020 and guided Boro to a 10th-placed finish last season with 18 wins and 18 losses in the Championship.
But this season results have been inconsistent, with the team winning just two of the first nine games before a run of four wins in five matches.
A 2-0 loss at home to Birmingham City last week was followed up with a 3-1 defeat at Luton on Tuesday before their draw with the third-placed Baggies.

Gone: Middlesbrough sack Chris Wilder after ‘breakdown in relationship’ with owner Steve Gibson and with Boro in bottom-three after disastrous start in Championship
As well as their poor form on the pitch, it is understood a breakdown in his relationship with Boro owner Steve Gibson was also behind his departure.
Alex Crook: “The vibes coming out the last few weeks haven’t been positive with regards to their relationship with Chris Wilder,”
Middlesbrough Football Club have terminated the contract of manager Chris Wilder with immediate effect
— Middlesbrough FC (@Boro) October 3, 2022
“I think you can read a lot into the nature of the departure by the statement, this is a very brutal statement from Boro. It’s only two paragraphs long, and because it’s so short and maybe not very sweet that tells you all you need to know about Wilder’s relationship with the hierarchy above him.
“I’ve been hearing whispers for some time now that him and Steve Gibson the owner haven’t seen eye-to-eye.
“I think there were some issues over the distribution of transfer funds particularly when Djed Spence was sold to Tottenham. I think Wilder was hoping to get that deal done earlier in the summer and was definitely hoping for more of those transfer profits to spend.
“I think the story was similar with Marcus Tavernier and when that relationship starts to break down between manager and owner there’s only one winner.”
