FINAL RESULTS OF BORO QUIZ - junos_boots favourite 90s-ish goals

Juninho - little genius. Again how do you pick 3 from his repertoire, his portfolio, his symphony of goals. Very difficult indeed but give it a go we shall. Theres some important goals and there's some spectacular ones and they all brought pure joy. Picked a shortlist of 11 but it could have been longer :-

Nottingham Forest Away. 24.8.96 Emerson lay off to his left and Juninho in on the charge smashes it rightfoot at the near post. The Boro fans behind that goal go bonkers. Great goal

Everton Away 14.9.96 quick interpassing on the edge of the area, Barmby back heel into the path of Juninho who whips it across to the keepers right.

FAC 6th Round. March 1997 Brilliant individual goal jinking his way through and setting up historic FAC QF victory at the Baseball Ground

Leicester Away ( Juninho's match) March 1997 Breakaway goal running from just inside the opposing half and rounding the keeper to cap a great performance.

Chelsea Home March 20 1997 Brilliant diving header starting and finishing a pinpoint Beck cross

Man United Away April 1997 Opening the scoring with a series of passing movements across United's box before appearing at the far post to slam across the keeper

Man United Home 10.4.2000 cutting in from the right, beating two defenders easily before unleashing an unstoppable drive into the fear post

Everton Away April 2000 at Goodison. Mesmorising run and one two on tech edge of the box before dummying the keeper

Leeds Away 15/3/2003 Stated at the edge of our own box ball worked down the left from George - eventually falling to the little man 27 yards out and firing an unstoppable goal

Blackburn Away Dec 2003 His second goal cutting in from the right when nothing seemed on and unleashing a thunderbolt to the far corner in pouring rain.

That jig of celebration scoring the winner against Arsenal LC Semi final away at Highbury January 2004

How do you pick from that little lot? I go for :-

1. His diving header winner against Chelsea at Riverside 20/3/97 starting and ending the move. Such an important game to win.

2. His jinking run to score the opener against Derby in the FAC QF at the Baseball Ground

3. Man United Home 10.4.2000 the mazy run from the left before curling an unstoppable shot in at the far post.

right here goes, :

1st. Leicester away 97. It was his game. Maybe if he hadn't have played that well we would have won the cup 7 years earlier than we did? Tenuous I know.
2nd. Man U away 97. Nough said
3rd. Diving header v Chelsea 97.

All 97 I've just noticed, but his goals accross the years were amazing. Can't wait to see him play again in the charity game, he's going to get some reception.

Agree with zoo, how can you pick 3 for TLF

it's late I'm tired so I will just choose 3 & leave it at that

Derby away FAC QF putting the mighty Boro one nil up & enroute to making history

Huddersfield at home in the 1997 league cup, Boro ran out 5-1 winners but his goal, close control was a joy to watch from a player we'll never see the likes of again, a true magician

Man Utd at OT he rounded off a supurb move when putting the Boro one nil up, in a thrilling 3-3 draw, another game we should have won & guaranteed our survival

There that was quick

UTMB

1. Love the delight following his goal at the baseball Ground in the FAC QF. Derby defenders helpless as he weaved his way to the left and clinically lifted the ball over their gk.

2. That diving header against Chelsea at home. Started way out on the left. Sheer magic of beating his opponent before haring into the box to get on the end of Becks whipped cross.

3. Screamer at Leeds in March 2003 Ending a move started when breaking up play on the edge of the Boro box and sweeping upfield and taking a layback first time with his tracer bullet.

Some great memories looking back at those goals, difficult to choose when reminded of some less well known ones, but again I'll stick with my memory

1 Chelsea diving header, March 1997 - My favourite goal from the Riverside era, started and finished the move and made the space for himself.
2 Derby County, FA Cup Quarter Final 1997 - another give and go and then he weaves his magic to dumbfound the defenders and put us on the road to our first ever fa cup semi final.
3 Man Utd, May 1997 - fantastic team play and cool finish.

Man City goal in the FA Cup, Arsenal in the League Cup Semi-Final, Man Utd in 2003 and Sheffield Wednesday in 97 unlucky to miss out!

Interesting to note in these past three players how many goals Beck was involved in!

John Grattan Hendrie 235 appearances 56 goals (League 193 games 44 goals)

Next up a player we signed on a weekly basis through our catalogue (groan:p) and was there before the monumental shift in how Boro operated. Without him it is doubtful we would have got promoted in Robbo’s first season. His form at the start of 1994-95 season was out of this world.

We signed him from Leeds after our last day adventures versus Newcastle, there is a great clip of him as a Leeds (non) player on the same day at Bournemouth – did he already know he was joining us? I will post it tomorrow with his results. He had always been a thorn in our side especially in his Bradford days so it was a signing I was very pleased about.

I loved the way in his first season how he and Ripley kept swapping wings, to try and bamboozle opponents and it worked a treat, especially in away games where our form before Christmas was superb.

He played under 3 Boro managers, before finally being squeezed out, following the arrival of Ravenelli etc after our first season back in premier league. He then helped Barnsley up, along with Wilkinson and did have a short spell as their manager.

From the good people at MFC, here is a montage of his goals

Having been snowed under by entries (zero) for the tie break quiz so far, this is the latest absolutely dire track in the competition.

My own personal 123 of the goals is as follows

In 1st place a goal that put in place something that I (and I guess many other Boro fans) thought would never happen. The Boro were going to an FA Cup semi final. It was a fantastic day, and what a great goal. A beautifully weighted ball from Hignett, the great touch to take him into the box sand that lovely dinked finish as the keeper committed himself – just superb. Not sure why every clip I can find has the same stutter in the stream as Juninho breaks into the box.

Mar 1997 v Derby FA Cup https://youtu.be/4It-gw-spQg

2nd The opener at Old Trafford, it was the dashed hope and the near misses that season that really break my heart, looking back now. This goal was an example of how good we could be, lovely team goal with a great curling finish from Juninho.

May 1997 v Manchester United https://youtu.be/4It-gw-spQg

3rd Another successful night for us in the cup (despite Boro montage claiming it was a league game). The away leg versus Arsenal, great awareness by Mendietta and that little jig after it with the pure joy on Juninho’s face – matched by mine I might add. This was a goal that picked me up and had me strutting around work for weeks (loads of Gunners fans at work then)

Jan 2004 v Arsenal League Cup Semi 1st leg https://youtu.be/zEjOiVOljSU?t=84

There were so many other goals that I could have put for example

Chelsea header - https://youtu.be/PCCt2ltHXmU?t=6

Leeds equalizer, that had me believing a miracle was going to happen

https://youtu.be/pHB1zw1Jzj0?t=417

The goal against Man U – game where we fell foul of the rule brought in after the Old Trafford meeting for intimidating the official (linesman was right)

https://youtu.be/47O4RXmedJg?t=128

Another Leeds game 2003 a blistering shot (learnt new adjective after overuse of screamer last time)

https://youtu.be/G6v7yBAWMrM?t=107

So many others – will we ever see his like again (unlikely in my lifetime).

Here is the league table. Not happy viewing for me.

John Hendrie was my favourite player at that time. A super strong winger who became a super strong inside forward. I was over the moon we signed him. I had hoped we might sign him ever since I first saw him play for Bradford. I spoke to him outside the players entrance once whilst he was sporting a smart red Jacket. He told me he bought it at Burtons, The following Monday, I was the proud owner of it. Two weeks later I am hanging around again when he comes round the corner in a different coloured one of the same make I think, green if memory serves me right. He was rushing to get to the doorway when out of the corner of his eye he clocks me and suddenly starts laughing out loud and gives me the thumbs up. I was hoping he’d sign it (on the inside, I’d even taken a marker pen) but he was away inside.

Absolutely is one of my all time favourite players.

1. Millwall Oct 90. What a run, they had no answer, amazing pace and ball control and a super controlled finish. Possibly my favourite ever goal. Man Utd fans talk of that Giggs goal, but he was no John Hendrie

2. Norwich Oct 90 (a vintage month) Lge Cup, cuts in from the right, defenders back off and then 25 yds out with his wrong foot curls a powerful shot into the top left corner of the East stand goal. A thing of real beauty.

3. Blackburn Dec 92. His hattrick game. The one where he receives the ball under pressure after Wilko’ flick on, back to goal, turns and as he is falling connects to curl it into the bottom left corner past the outstretched hands of the Bobby Mimms. Immense skill to get that shot away on the turn, with great accuracy.

Thought I had the tie break, but can't remember McFly ever managing the Boro! More work needed......

Colin Todd made 2 excellent signings, John Hendrie & Robbie Mustoe
I couldn't believe we signed a young, excing, tricky winger, sign for us, who had tortured us only a couple of seasons previous, well done Toddy bringing JH to the Boro

One of my heroes too. He is or was a solicitor for a firm in Bradford. Working on the sports consultants side. Met him a few times. Top bloke. Fantastic player.
Was he, I didn't know that
Yes a lovely bloke & a very good honest professional
He scored Boro's 1st PL hat trick

He is a sports consultant for Blacks solicitors in Leeds. He has been there a good while now.

Ok so think Im there. Of all the goals across 6 seasons I’ve come down to the 2nd and 3rd goals he ever scored for us as my top 2.

1 Millwall home October 1990. Goal has gone into folklore as perhaps the best goal ever. Mazy dribble from just outside our own box to finish with aplomb.

2. A few weeks later against First division opposition in the League Cup. Home to Norwich. Cuts inside from the right before firing an absolute worldy into the top left hand corner of the bob end.

3. Not the most spectacular but certainly a favourite. The winner and his second against Luton that proved not only to be the last ever competitive goal at Ayresome Park but instrumental in our promotion for our new season at the Riverside. Pollock the marauder down the left, taken up by a flying Derek Whyte who centres for Johnny to sidefoot home and send the ground into ecstasy. Thanks for the memories John.
