Boro "ins" and "outs" since 2019. Frightening (!) .....

Just take a look at these stats* and see what you think.
For me, its raises many questions - particularly about recruitment [?!!] and inconsistency.

* You can also access appearances / squad stats / minutes played / substitutions / starting eleven / goals, etc

I think it’s called managed decline

The likes of pullis started it filling the side with his automaton cloggers and forcing the talent and creativity out ( oh apart from Adama who he single handedly made into a player).

Rather annoyingly, it vindicates pretty much all the naysayers and doom merchants on here who condemn signings before they've kicked a ball.

The past two years reminds me of signing Aliadiere, Hoyte and Euell, etc. You think they've seen deeper meaning in the stats, there's a vision... But nope, we've bought bench warmers in some kind of Moneyball fantasy.

The turnover per se isn’t necessarily a problem, it’s a product of modern day football especially at our level where clubs are constantly trying to find a magic formula. However, in our case we replace similar with similar and there are few upgrades. Constantly in the words of Orange Juice….Rip it up and start again.

Maybe instead of being like a kid in a sweet shop every transfer window we should seek to develop and improve what we already have?

Examples this season, we have signed forwards as development players or on loan, when we have our own player developing at Bristol Rovers, we have signed Mowatt on loan when Hackney’s what we needed and we have promising keepers on loan while giving Man Citeh’s keeper game time ahead of the World Cup.

So we take one step forward and two back every January and summer!

Thing is moneyball is 20 years out of date

I was reading about Burnley who are using artificial intelligence and stats across Europe and if you look at their side last season it was pretty much all British and managed by Dyche

Within a season they have transformed their recruitment and have an (almost) entirely new squad of players from all over the world who they have identified and put in place a rookie manager in Kompany

Now they’re 3rd with a game in hand 🤷🏻‍♂️
And it's short term. They win a game or two then all of a sudden their system works. Watford, Norwich, Sheff Utd etc. all had great systems when they were promoted but they soon dropped back down.

We never fully got to grips with moneyball

I could post back even further, but fans would be in melt-down.
Not convincing reading.:(
Pages and pages and pages of.. above average players, genuine punching above our weight talent. There is a large turnover of players for a number of reasons, loans players, change in leagues, contracts ending.. most of which look justifiable.

Our loan signings on the whole have been amongst the best in the league. Each season tells a story and not one of them lacks ambition or investment beyond our means and stature.

That’s quite a bold statement Newy! I’ve never analysed our loan signings v others, but the fact we have made the play offs once since relegation suggests that others are doing better in terms of overall recruitment and development?

2017/18 5th
2018/19 Derby, Villa, West Brom, Leeds, Sheff Utd, Norwich 7th
2019/20 Swansea, Cardiff, Fulham, Brentford, West Brom, Leeds 17th
2020/21 Bournemouth, Barnsley, Swansea, Brentford, Watford, Norwich 10th
2021/22 Luton, Sheffield, Forrest, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Fulham 7th
2022/23 Norwich, Milwall, Sheffield, Burnley, Blackburn, QPR

The decision to appoint Garry Monk set us on a disastrous slide, Pulis didn’t do much better, Woodgate was appointed to save costs, Warnock save the day and Wilder bottled it

Apart from Leeds’ appointment of Bielsa, Brentford’s signings of Ethan Pinnock and Ivan Toney I don’t think we’ve been THAT far away.

The loan signings of Tammy Abraham for Aston Villa, Aleksandar Mitrović for Fulham both turned us down because of Tony Pulis anti football. Ah well.. even with the benefit of hindsight how much better do we actually do?

Villa, Leeds, Brentford pipped us to the post

Forrest? Bournmouth? Fulham? levelled up

Sheffield, Norwich, Swansea, Luton, Watford are ahead of the game

Derby & Barnsley not so much so..

West Brom, Huddersfield & Cardiff are all in the same boat as us.. I know who I’d rather be and which Chairman I’d rather back!

So that’s where we are. We missed the boat with Monk and Pulis Villa, Leeds & Brentford taking our place. We consolidated under Woodgate and Warnock meaning Forrest, Bournmouth & Fulham jumped the queue.. but we didn’t go the way of Derby or Barnsley.

Now we’re on the back foot from Wondering eye Wilder letting Sheffield, Norwich, Swansea, Luton & Watford elbow their way to the front table.

Now we sit, feeling sorry for ourselves with our packed lunches snaffled, underpants wedgied, crying to go home. Our best mates are now ‘wee the bed’ West Brom, ‘huff and puff’ Huddersfield & ‘can’t do pe miss’ Cardiff

Cool cousin Carrick is coming to school, he’ll tell us what haircut to get, what shoes to wear and what music to listen to.. Next season we’re going to the school disco with a pocket full of poppers!!
