Boro - A Tactical Analysis

Our midfield is not tracking runners - whether this is because they are being told to stay forward or because of personal errors it is causing a lot of problems.

First goal tonight - Engel again has two men - and the one it is currently back to shoots well across the keeper.

The only bit I'm not sure about is where he says they're too slow passing out from the back.

I'm not denying that's the case, but a lot of the time it's a deliberate tactic to try and draw the opposition onto us and leave spaces to play in. He doesn't really acknowledge that (although it is just an amateur's views, albeit a very knowledgeable amateur).

Once we've done that though the tempo could often be better certainly.

The point on the press is true. We have a lot of new players in our squad who don’t understand how we play yet or have very little experience st this level. You only need one weak link to expose a press and they get through, currently we have lots. This is why new players are brought into a team slowly and one of the main reasons we struggle early in the season getting them up to speed, this isn’t an issue so much with experienced players from the prem and top end championship as they are used to playing this way on match days.

Think Brentford struggled early on in seasons a few times didn't they? Possibly for similar reasons.

It's stuff like this that isn't immediately obvious to fans, but has a big impact. That's not to say we don't need to improve the obvious stuff too.

But if you sort the press out we don't have to do as much defending and we'll win the ball in more dangerous areas which makes attacking a bit easier. It has a big knock on effect to overall performance.
