Boris Johnson 'worried his £150,000 salary isn't enough'

If Carrie goes out to get a job like many ordinary folks partners have to in order to make ends meet then I am sure the nanny‘s salary would be covered. Not sure why they need a nanny mind, but where theres a will theres a way. What about their parents, they could always help out the odd time, it is what normal families do. ........ Ah wait on, I said normal families !

I was always quite shocked years and years ago at how little The leader of the country earns. I think it was Blair or someone who was earning around the 100k mark and it struck me as relatively low compared to a lot of jobs in the city, footballers and so on. For some reason I’d always imagined as the PM you would be on a huge salary.

Does the remuneration package for the highest political office and role with most responsibility need serious reform and taking another look at it? Yes.

Does Boris Johnson have grounds for complaint? No.

I guess the higher earnings begin once you are out of office and start picking up speaking roles, member of various boards and executive chairman one day a week type positions for which you are paid a small fortune

Yes we are assuming he has actually complained , the anonymous source of the article is telling the truth and so on.

An Army Private salary begins at 20,400 GBP`s after passing out.
Putting your life on the line for your country.
I know who this country need the most - and its not the Prime Minister(n)
Just shows as a society how messed up our society is.

emergency services, military and many others doing meaningful worthwhile jobs meanwhile wealth beyond our imagination goes to sports stars, politicians, social influencers etc. It’s disgraceful really!

If his kids are costing him - they can get a Satda job or a paper-round!

Tories believe in a market led economy. Unfortunately, there is not much of a market for Prime Ministers these days>

I'm no fan of Boris or the government....

That's said it really doesn't seem 'much' for running a country (even if it's badly)

To think film stars / footballers and Z list celebs from Towie ect make far more😕

To think Lineker makes far more for talking about football highlights or Zoe Ball for playing 'records'.

And there it goes, first whataboutery of the thread and predictably by one of the usual defenders of all things Tory.

Sorry I missed the point you were trying to make in that thoroughly intelligent and insightful post

Thankfully there are some posters on here who understand the point I was making.
It obviously upset you that I chose your liberal lefty hero, and hypocrite, Lineker. Well, the UK Prime Minister gets paid less than Ashley Fletcher. Think about that.

The position of PM should be seen as a vocation as opposed to a money making exercise.
Comparisons with figures in the entertainment industry are ridiculous but I suspect you know that anyway and this is just a deflection tactic.

So, what colour is the sky on your planet ?

Surely you realise that MP's and ministers should be paid a wage that reflects the position, as in any career. In fact it is an issue largely driven by the left who, quite rightly, recognise that if these roles are underpaid then only the wealthy would be prepared to take them.

The original piece was in The Times on Saturday, here's an extract:

Those in contact with the prime minister, both friends and colleagues, say he is finding aspects of the job extraordinarily tough. They are concerned that Mr Johnson’s longstanding tendency for dark moods is being exacerbated by the pressure he is under.

On the personal front, they say, Mr Johnson, 56, is worried and complaining about money. He is still supporting, to different degrees, four out of his six children, has been through an expensive divorce and had his income drop by more than half as a result of fulfilling his lifetime ambition.

As a backbench MP, with his Daily Telegraph column netting him £275,000 and lucrative speaking engagements, he was earning well in excess of £350,000 a year. His prime ministerial salary of about £150,000 might seem perfectly sufficient — but that is not what he actually receives. His use of the flat that he shares with his fiancée, Carrie Symonds, above Number 11 is taxed as a benefit in kind. Any food sent up from the Downing Street kitchen has to be paid for and if they want to have friends to stay at Chequers — Covid restrictions permitting — they receive a bill from the government.

As one friend put it: “Boris, like other prime ministers, is very, very badly served. He doesn’t have a housekeeper — he has a single cleaner and they’re worried about being able to afford a nanny. He’s stuck in the flat and Downing Street is not a nice place to live. It’s not like the Élysée or the White House where you can get away from it all because they’re so big. Even if he or Carrie want to go into the rose garden they have to go through the office.”

One thing I do have sympathy for is if he is suffering the after effects of Covid-19. I have close work colleague who contracted Covid through their spouse who worked in a care home, was laid low for a week and still now four months later can be fine one day and unable to get out of bed the next.

They are paid a salary that reflects their position, they have a independent committee that sets it and they know all about the wage when they set out to become an MP.

If an MP's motivation is money, then they should never be an MP.

I thought they all had little side earners where they sit on the boards of companies getting paid thousands for ‘advising’ based on a 3 hour month. Ex PM’s make fortunes doing speeches around the world once out of office.

I have no problem paying them more to run the country in all honesty, but they then should not be allowed on the boards of other companies offering ‘advice’. Which from the outside looking in seems a bribe to influence policy and decision making at the heart of government. Lets face it if he thinks the money is poor, he could always look for work elsewhere, There are plenty of circuses looking for a good clown, and the BBC keep appointing them on a good salary too.

"He is still supporting, to different degrees, four out of his six children, has been through an expensive divorce "- No different to millions of other parents.
