Book recommendations

You're stealing from the author, who loses his or her royalty.
You better lock me up and throw away the key.

Have you never returned something you don’t like? Returning an audible book because you aren’t enjoying it or can’t warm to the reader is no different.

If you weren’t allowed to do it, Amazon wouldn’t promote it.

Now come down off that high horse before you hurt yourself. 😜

Nothing wrong with getting a refund if you don't like it, as per Ta &Cs. The post referred to "abusing" this, with a wink. That's theft from the author, who may be scraping a living , and lots of people do it. No apologies for pointing out from my high horse that theft has a victim.

Just finished the book this morning whilst at cheerleading with my youngest daughter.

Thanks for the recommendation, Really enjoyed it from start to finish. It is crazy how what was done and said mirrors the propaganda that the Russians talk about now with the invasion of Ukraine.

It is unbelievable how the corruption runs through all levels of authority and the number they talk about are insane.

On side note also watched the sky Atlantic programme on Chornobyl and the way they handled that in the 80’s mirrors this too.
Ahh brilliant, I'm really pleased you enjoyed it. When you hear about the ongoings within the Kremlin it's a definite eye opener. I have actually just been thinking whether parallels can be drawn with Sergei Magnitsky and the death of Paul Urey, the British aid work who was captured by the Russians recently. I sincerely hope there wasn't.

You are just being pedantic with both of your replies but instead of having a dig at me for returning a book I may have read, have a go at the real people that are short changing authors.

Amazon offer books free for trial periods and I, like many others, take advantage of these free trials. So as I said before, don’t take the moral high ground with me, pen a letter to Amazon.

And on another note, I can’t see any winky thing in any of my posts and I haven’t edited them.

Edit: Can I also say, don’t drag this wonderful thread into a slanging match. Personally message me if you want an argument.

Simon Kuper is an interesting writer I went to a talk by him at Hay in May where he was talking about his book "Chums" which tells us why we are ruled by people from Oxford University who have been to Public School.

He is sports writer on the FT but he is very interested in the culture around Football.

He is from an academic and priviledged background, but because of his origins as Dutch/South African he is seen as a bit of an clever/outsider in the UK. He did go to Oxford University but he is keen to criticise.

A lot of here will like Soccernomics which he part wrote. A chapter refers to why football was so popular in the new industrial towns of Victorian Britain and to some extent the same trends in later times in other European countries.

It was football v the enemy that I think is his best work.

I’m not a fan of soccernomics as I think like fever pitch before it it’s become a cliche of itself football is too complex to pigeon hole.

It’s not his book per se it’s how others have then used it as though it’s somehow a fait a complis on a very variable issue.

I realise my post was abrupt, apologies for that. I meant people who abuse the system by reading books and then claiming a refund from Amazon even though there was nothing wrong with the book, not those who genuinely don't enjoy the book. I thought you both meant the former, but I was clearly wrong. The free books you mention are a promotion carried out with the author's permission in the hope of selling more books, so Amazon are actually helping authors. No offence intended, peace.

I thought the same thing regarding the Paul Urey

Looking for my next read so have decided to go for the follow on to Red Notice. Freezing order,

"Where the Crawdad's Sing", is a really good read and I'm now reading "12 Years a Slave" which is heavy going but I only have about 70 pages to finish so will stick with it. It's very similar to the "Mandingo" books by Kyle Onstott, which i read years ago when the TV series "Roots" was being aired.

I’ve also just finished Red Notice after seeing it recommended on this thread, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would anybody be able to recommend something similar I could move on to next?

I’m presently listening to Harry Pearson’s The Farther Corner and are disappointed with it. The content of the book is good but the narrator is putting on north east accents and is spoiling it for.

I’ve got half way through and not sure if I will continue. I am sure it is better reading it personally than on audible.

Once you've finished would you be able to update with a recommendation or not for Freezing Order? 😁
Am about 3/4 through the book now and really enjoying it. Amazing the things the guy has been through and the way the Russian just don’t care.

Was going to save for my hols but will need a new book before I go now.

Corruption in the Met is currently in the news, when isn’t it?

“Who killed Daniel Morgan?
Peter Jukes and Alastair Morgan ( Daniel’s brother)

Good call on ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’. Excellent yarn.
