Book recommendations

After some help? Have seen people recommend books in threads before but am unable to find them now.

Am looking for something to read, generally like true crime books. Stuff about the mafia in Italy and US, Pablo Escobar cartels. Do like a bit of history. Particularly around World War II and Hitler him self. Am also interested in Russia 🇷🇺 at the moment.

Does anybody have any recommendations around these subjects or similar. Thanks in advance

Red Notice.

I'm currently reading it and it's a true story which gives a massive insight into Putin's Russia. It's a must read.

Antony Beevor - Russian Revolution and Civil War 1917-1921

I have hardback version only just come out a month ago. Half price at Sainsbury's. (£15)

I love his writing, you think you are there, but he can also quickly sum up the big picture of what was happening and a lot happened in this period.

The Tsar days were brutal, but Bolsheviks were worse if anything, so single minded and ruthless.

Helps me understand some of the conflict of today. I didn't realise Finland and Poland were part of Russia in 1917.

This was the most decorated unit in WW2. Only the Durham Light Infantry saw as much action. As a Light Cavalry unit they set off for war on horses, were converted to artillery, then became an independent tank regiment. They fought at Tobruk, El Alamein, led the spearhead on Gold beach on DDay, were involved throughout the Normandy campaign, were part of XXX Corp and were the first into Nazi Germany. 21 Battle honours in total.

If WW2 and real life spy stories grab your interest then pretty much anything by Ben MacIntyre is worth checking out.

I am currently reading A Spy Amongst Friends which is about an MI6 agent who was a spy for the Russians during the whole of WW2 and the cold war era. That seems to tick a few of your boxes.

And I just finished Double Cross, which is about the double agent spies who were trying to deceive the Germans about the D-Day landings.

Both are excellent. Who needs fiction when real life stories are so fascinating?

Go to the search box (top right), type 'books' then check 'search titles only'. That should find most of the old threads (and a few other things!) For WW2 try "Bodyguard of Lies' by Anthony Cave Brown. It's a history of the Special Operations Executive. It's got every plot, deception, special operations, behind-enemy-lines film you've ever seen. Fantastic stuff. My favourite Russian novel is probably 'Children of the Arbat' by Anatoly Rybatov. Life under Stalin.

Brilliant, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Keep me posted on how you find it 👍

Just finished the book this morning whilst at cheerleading with my youngest daughter.

Thanks for the recommendation, Really enjoyed it from start to finish. It is crazy how what was done and said mirrors the propaganda that the Russians talk about now with the invasion of Ukraine.

It is unbelievable how the corruption runs through all levels of authority and the number they talk about are insane.

On side note also watched the sky Atlantic programme on Chornobyl and the way they handled that in the 80’s mirrors this too.

Try going on audible and looking at some books you like and see what else is recommended, can give you a good idea and you can read reviews etc

Audible are also offering free listening trials to prime and new customers.

You need to listen to the audible sample, I can’t get away with some of the readers.

I've made that mistake before. Read the reviews as well, particularly the critical ones.

The Power of the Dog, The Cartel & The Border (Don Winslow) they’re fiction but based on a lot of factual evidence.
