Had the pleasure of meeting him a few years ago when my younger brother introduced me to him

As a youngster at the Boro, he was the fastest youth/reserve team player & so represented the Boro against a number of other teams fastest players & won a race around wembley before the FAC final, with other teams fastest player, either 1972 or 74

Unfortunately he never made a 1st team appearence & left the Boro, against big Jacks wishes

Name from the past .... as you say never played for the 1st team but remember him as a wily speedy runner ... bit in the Dave Chadwick mode ... dont know where I saw him but used to go to the stiffs games now and then ... Maybe at Pools?

Girl in my year at school was called Scaife, maybe Claire, wonder if she was related.

Played against him a handful of times at school level. He was more than useful at that level for sure!

You seemed unsure of the year of the Wembley race. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t 1972 though because Leeds v Arsenal was the only Cup Final around those years I didn’t watch live as was playing school cricket. Funny how you remember these things but FA Cup Finals were big events in those days.

I do remember watching “The FA Cup race” though so Im pretty sure it was 1974 as I think I also remember Bob had the white band across the chest in his victory.

1972 fa cup final - it was the centenary of the fa cup - the 91st final (due to war breaks)

its recorded in Harry Pearsons book - the farther corner.

Recorded or recalled.? Hmm I’d love to discuss that with Harry. Maybe it was but I still have that image of the white band and thought we were invited to take part with an entrant as we had won the 1st division.

Worked with his son Nicki for a few years. Not seen him in a while though.

They were great friends too... I remember Bob's son lending me his signed copy of Souness' autobiography.

Top bloke is Bob and his late wife Kath was a lovely woman too.

Regular in the Master Cooper , think he playedin the northern league maybe Whitby, Sinners etc was also a doorman on the Kirk , nice fella

Yea he managed Whitby Town too for a while.

Yes. I’m still leaning to 74 despite what Harry says in his latest book. Would be great to get confirmation. It was televised but no doubt lost in the cobwebs of the television archives.

Sure it was 74 before the Liverpool v Newcastle final, he played Northern League for years after he left the pro. game and was really good at that level,I played against him on a Sunday a few times and he was a lovely footballer who always seemed to make it look easy at that level,also a very nice lad.

When was he doorman at the Kirk?

He played for Whitby Town in the late 1970s. I saw him a few times.

There are hundreds of Scaifes in Whitby, amongst locals its one of the most common surnames.

The reason I thought 72 was for the centenary, although that seems to be wrong

looking for the race on youtube - i came across this for the 1972 cup - no sign of the apprentice race - however!

go to 18:50 - and there is the most amazing footage of the boro v man u 0-3 - with charlton law and best - Hickton , Mills & Boam - Ayresome is rammed, one of the 40,000 gates - played in the afternoon due to the miners strike and the subsequent non use of floodlights. - i was in the chicken run that afternoon - and george best is top notch.
