Blow to the European Super League

"The Fifa-Uefa rules under which any new competition is subject to prior approval are compatible with EU competition law,” he said in a statement read out at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.

“Whilst ESLC is free to set up its own independent football competition outside the Uefa and Fifa ecosystem, it cannot however, in parallel with the creation of such a competition, continue to participate in the football competitions organised by Fifa and Uefa without the prior authorisation of those federations"

Basically seems that the Super League is dead unless UEFA agree to it.

They'd have to leave their respective leagues to participate otherwise, which just wouldn't happen.

I wish it would happen. They can all sod off and we can get back to having a better competition with a fairer playing field.

they should put the CL back to knockout from round 1 - seeded if need be - but knockout over 2 legs as it used to be... make every round count..

it's been a sham of a competition for years..

Good the ESLC concept has been hit below the waterline... may it & the clubs involved sink quickly & without trace..

Football at the top level is an advertising campaign and commercial venture masquerading as competition, the fact that we're playing a World Cup in Qatar in December is the ultimate evidence of this.

Organisations like FIFA, UEFA, and the FA have no interest in level playing fields or the discovery of merit they are focused on how best to exploit their 'product' to make money and thereafter protect their own interests.

It would be madness to think that corrupt administrations are going to suddenly play to the rules and not go all out to find ways to circumnavigate them, you just have to look at this World Cup to see that promises and provisos that were ridden over roughshod to know that if the will for a Superleague remains the way will inevitably be found.

I still feel there is an element of inevitability with all this.

I don't think it's if, but when it'll happen.

The money and the power these owners now have, in football, is just staggering.

The owners of Newcastle, City, PSG (the list is endless) shouldn't be allowed.

They should be allowed. Anyone should be allowed to buy a club. They just shouldn't be able use their wealth for a gain.
FFP doesn't go anywhere near far enough. There's so many loopholes and it still allows clubs to grow organically and use their wealth to an advantage.

Bring in a salary cap. Also look at addressing the problem of the big clubs hoarding all the youngsters and loaning out. I guess having a salary cap would potentially address this because they wouldn't want to waste their budget on 30 odd youngsters.

Salary caps are fairly easy to circumvent for clubs with external sources of finance, e.g. using image rights. Similarly, state owners of clubs, such as Saudi, emirates, etc, can sidestep squad limits by owning multiple clubs, viz City Football Group.
