Bilsdale Mast

Passed Bilsdale Mast this afty and the construction of the new lattice mast has reached the first guy stay level and is about level with the temporary mast which is about 80 metres high. The lattice work seems to be in circa 20ft prefabricated sections. Unfortunately nobody was getting any 'cheeky overtime' in so I've no idea what the construction technique is. Given that the final mast height is 300 metres it's just over a 1/4 of its full height.

We travel up from Derbyshire each game and previously we could listen to BBC Tees to about the A64 Leeds/York junction. On a good day, almost to Doncaster. Now, we're lucky to get BBC Tees to the Osmotherly/Northallerton turn-off.

What’s the access like? Did you get up there on foot or in a vehicle?

Back when I used to work in Cambridge during the week and travel home on a Friday afternoon, I new I was approaching home when I could pick up the local bbc radio just after the M18 junction on the A1weather permitting.

Before the problems, I could pick up BBC Tees just I was coming out of Hayton on the A1079 towards York. Now I have to wait until just before Thirsk on the A19 on the FM 104 frequency, then chop to 95 around Borrowby/Knayton. I can’t get the DAB signal until after Osmotherly. On the way home I regularly have to change to Radio Player through Apple Play if I want to hear all of the phone in.

Freeview and DAB signals are iffy in Darlo. Can't wait for the new mast to go into service!
The new Bilsdale mast won't improve DAB reception in Teesside/South Durham in any way as this area has always been covered by transmitters at Eston Nab and Brusselton (just to the west of Shildon).

I can’t get any DAB stations without interference which makes them unlistenable. I can get normal Tees ok.

Hope it gets sorted otherwise our DAB is useless. Having to use apps for DAB like BBC Sounds (which is a great service).
