Lol only 31k could of swore there was more my memory is definitely going, we were in the East end which was packed, yeah Bill was lucky we and Leeds had just won our respective leagues

Here is an interview with Dr Judith Gates about her husband's dementia - Judith has spoken in the past about how Bill quit football early because of constant migraines after spending hours heading the ball in training. Heading in training is now finally being controlled at all levels of football this season.

Good player was Bill! I didn't realise he had dementia. Didn't he live abroad?

He got a great Testimonial V Leeds with a very big crowd - think it was 4-4 - I'm sure Erimus can confirm this!
My first ever Boro match.
I was in the Clive Road Corner (when did that become the away end?).
A late Billy Bremner equaliser if I remember correctly.
Looking back, my devastation resuting from that equaliser was totally out of proportion in relation to the importance of the result.
I.e.
Devastation = 97
Importance = 0

IIRC, Brian Kidd broke his jaw in one of the many FAC ties we had with Man Utd in the early 70's, I can check later to see if its correct
Correct. Half Time in the Tunnel I believe. I also heard (maybe rumour) that Bobby Charlton was a bit naughty as well. We were giving a good account of ourselves. I was in the Stretford end - packed house.

Stretford end, wow (y)

Another question for Erimus.

In these times of 'well paid' footballers it got me thinking as to how far we have to go back to find the last Boro player awarded a testimonial? Who and when?
Was Juninho's game vs PSV Eindhoven at home in the Mogga era not classed as a testimonial? Wijnaldum one of the scorers for PSV that day.

Wasnt Bill a bit of a hard-case? I am surprised Brian Kidd had it in him

No it was on the pitch. I was at the match and said at the time he punched gates as he jumped for the ball and Bill was stood on the deck. Was reported as an accidental clash in press but it was only years later(may have been in Gates testimonial program) that he said he had been punched.

Erimus maybe able to check that out but I don't think uou will find any reference to a punch in match reports. It was Man Ure though so you can see why.

R - Same as me - the crowd was bigger than for nearly all our league games that season. I was a junior and the for the Leeds game I had restricted view. Leeds had quite a lot of support on Teesside then after 12 years of success with Revie. They had just won the old Division 1. Review was from Middlesbrough and Big Jack for us, had been the backbone of Leeds from 1961-1973.

The old Clive Road corner was made the away end in the summer of 1977.

I believe before 1966 the whole of the East end of the ground was one open terrace. With the East end seat created for the 1966 World Cup.

Go & check now asred, I have acopy of the game, match report & Bill Gates testimonila programme

Gonna be a damp squid here. Bill got a great crowd and a lot of money which set up for life in the Cayman islands.

This Dementure / Football link case is getting stronger by the day.
Can I politely point out you are talking out of your F***ing **** here! I grew up across the road from Bill and family, lovely bloke, played footy with his lads. The testimonial gave him enough money to set up his first sports shop in Dundas Arcade in 1974. Money made from that humble start led to his move to Hill St, so over the years not only did he work hard and plan his investments wisely, he also created plenty of jobs for young people in the area. Yes he retired well, but he and his wife both worked hard, (she was no Wag, she was in senior positions in the education system) and both gave plenty back to the community over the years. We could do with more people like them!

I remember reading how he went to hospital in Manchester but no-one from United got in touch.

Just watched superb interview regarding Bill Gates ex Boro player and his dementia on GB News.His wife talked brilliantly about the condition and what needs to be done now.Lovely to see a framed Boro shirt on their wall number 5.
His wife is a doctor

This is the only referrance I've come across, inside his testimonial programne & I have two seperate match reports of the replay, including after match comments on the defeat, nothing about BG at all

Bill Gates was a Chartered Accountant who insisted on finishing his education whilst still playing football for Boro as a youngster.
So the idea that he was just lucky to get the testimonial v Leeds is a bit far fetched. I am sure being a chartered accountant he will have had himself well set up on his football wages even before the testimonial.
Also an absolute gentleman if you ever met him.
Very sad that he has dementia.

I dont think posters are been unkind to Bill Gates in saying that he was lucky to have such a big crowd at his testimonial, more the timing & both teams been champions the trophy displayed, the atmosphere at the club at the time, yes he certainly deserved it 100%, but compare the attendances to Frank Spraggon, 9.3k, John Hickton 10.5k, Willie Maddren, not too sure, Dave Armstrong 7.6k, Jim Platt & John Craggs etc, the timing was perfect
