Big towns with no major football clubs.

Watched Jane McDonald the other night who comes from Wakefield. (Edited) OK, they have a rugby team but, for a town of over 300,000, it seems strange that they do not have a football team in the EFL.

Yeah but they're a big rugby city, often to the detriment of local football teams.

My brother in law lives there (has a box at Bath rugby, even though he's from Middlesbrough :cautious:) and I was in a pub with him with Sky Sports Saturday (the thing with Jeff Stelling) on. Two blokes decked out in their full Bath Rugby gear with one saying to the other "Oh I see the pubs got the yob-ball on the TV again".

I lived in Cheltenham for a while and it's pretty much the same with Gloucester, which meant Saturdays end up with people getting back from the Gloucester game and sometimes the channel being turned over as a result. It didn't bother me as I'm a big rugby fan, but also appreciate it's not necessarily a sport watched that often around the Teesside area due to lack of pro clubs locally.

I think Salford was the largest city without a league club for decades. Obviously not the case anymore. I guess York is up there now.

My impression of living in West Yorkshire for a few years was that Rugby League is king there. Even in Leeds, at the height of David O'Leary's reign, I'd seem more RL than football shirts walking round the city.

Leeds, the football club, does draw a large amount of it's support from Wakefield, Castleford, Batley, Dewsbury and even York: towns and cities with no EFL club, but well-represented in RL.
