Bettinelli interest

The ball was mis hit by the attacker it looked like he hit it on to his other foot - which helped deceive the keeper and covering defender (Howson).

As said, he was very poor on two of the goals today.

I think we just had an off day all round today though. We’ll be back on the horse in mid-week!

I’m not overly convinced by him but there’s a lot more to goalkeeping than just shot stopping.
He has let in some soft goals, but another weakness is not protecting the centre backs by coming out to gather the ball. His kicking is long and reasonably accurate though.

Only a bit of fun : )

It's just interesting to see how things can change. I still think he's just an ordinary second tier goalkeeper. If we keep the defence nice and solid he'd be fine for a team looking at a run for the play-offs. But if you want to go higher than that then you might need to be looking for something else, unless you build the whole thing on an absolutely watertight defensive operation a la Aitor and Dimi.

I know it was.
I'm not so sure most views have changed though in that thread - most had doubts about him even in the mean run of clean sheets.
It's all just opinions and differences in them. I think he is a big liability and we'd be mad to sign him permanently. He was only part of the problem on tuesday however, far from the whole thing.
I also really hope Assombolonga leaves on the final whistle in May, but people slagging him on tuesday are more than a little unfair.

Struggling to see your point here, not many were people bothered and some stating he had nothing to do even on our unbeaten run

This thread just proves the point it was clear despite all the clean sheets and lack of conceding it was clear to many he wasn't good enough.
We just didn't have many shots against us.
For a keeper to have very little to do and still be clearly poor shows how bad he is.

I still find much of this debate really interesting.

When we've had 'dodgy' goalkeepers in the past, one of the main criticisms levelled at them was that they didn't instil confidence in the defence. Brad Jones was probably the most heavily criticised for this. Jason Steele was criticised for this for about two years until Shay Given pitched up. The team started keeping clean sheets but I don't really remember Given routinely making amazing saves, or even making many very good saves. He was just a very good goalkeeper - at the time he played for us - who had once been an excellent goalkeeper in his prime years . But he was showing this without really having to do too much - and people spent lots of time saying that he instilled confidence into his defenders.

This season Boro had conceded very few goals - especially from open play - up until we had some injuries. Three of our key players were out, including two main defenders as well as the main ball carrier. But when we were keeping the clean sheets prior to these injuries, was Bettinelli not instilling confidence into the defence during that period? If he wasn't then surely they would've conceded more goals on account of not trusting him, just like Boro defences playing in front of Jones and Steele did. How could they keep clean sheets and defend so well without a decent 'keeper behind them? And, if they were capable of defending well in spite of Bettinelli back then, why have they not been capable of it in recent weeks?

Our defence has primarily been man for man marking so a conventional line Infront of another line totally changes the game such that that installation of confidence isn't so necessary as very little makes its way through. When it has, his ability to get to anything wife of him has been poor and, from the two goals in his first match he can be beaten by anything.

Long kicker though.

Have the defence stopped man-for-man marking in recent weeks then, bear? In your opinion, or from what you have seen. If they haven't then why has Bettinelli been more exposed and had more work to do? If they have then surely that's an issue for the manager and his staff, not Bettinelli.
