Best way to travel to Newcastle?

I'm off to Newcastle next week with a mate and just wondering what the best option is for travel.

Could we get a direct bus to Newcastle from Boro bus station and if so, do they run regularly?

We were thinking of getting a taxi but would probably set us back £40/50 at least.

Direct bus from the station is quicker than train. And cheaper. Goes once an hour.

In Vera's land rover .

As a student I used to regularly get the X10 up, can get straight from Boro or if you can get a lift, head to Norton to make it much quicker. The bus is a much more enjoyable experience all round than getting the train though.

Yep, same. The train was much longer when I was at Uni.

The X10 used to take just over an hour when I got it as a student, probably a little longer now as it stops at Dalton Park on the way.

Free wifi on board these days though so you can update us fmttm-ers on any fat jelly bellied Geordies you see on board and any deluded 'Champions League chat' they are wibbling on about.

I used to get the X10 back for the matches when I was at Newcastle uni. I always found it a bit frustrating, the A19 bit was fine bit it was the slow bits through Stockton and Gateshead that were a nightmare.
Worst experience was with a really bad hangover one Saturday morning only to see us get done 6-1 by Arsenal.

Yeah I didn’t like the Stockton-Mid section, so always got my parents to pick me up from Norton. Much easier doing that final leg down the A19 instead of through Stockton.

Train for me - however, not for the serious gentleman traveller is the clanky direct train from Middlesbrough to Newcastle which goes up the coast and even sullies the borders of S****land.

The smart explorer would get a shanty regional carriage from Boro to Darlo, then decamp to the stylish mainline Darlo-Newcastle, probably escaping a fare on one or both points on the journey.

Settle in with a beer, free wifi and one of the finest toasties known to man, enjoy the expansive views of Durham Cathedral, chat up a business traveller or two over a hand of cards, and alight with a grand entrance at Newcastle Central Station 25 mins later surrounded by all of the best pubs that wretched hive of scum and villainy has to offer. The Forth Hotel would be my #1 pick for a launchpad refreshment, followed by an invigorating brunch of local “slow food” from the nearby Greggs.

Or just get the bus, there’s one every hour until about 5.30pm from memory 😁
