Best defenders

Everyone goes on about best players and best goalscorers blah blah but there is so much more to football than that :D

Ladies and gentlemen I give you my all time fave top 3 defenders in the world ever, in no particular order:

- Giorgio Chiellini - tough, ugly, uncompromising - would you like to face him?
- Gary Pallister - excellent positioning made it look all so easy - being very fast helped too
- Paolo Maldini - world class, simple as that

I'll give you
John Craggs - Boro's best ever right back & best uncapped England right back
Stuey Boam - No nonsense CH he would put his head where some wouldn't dare put there boots
Willie Maddren - Best ever Boro defender, he oozed class, he had the lot, can't praise him high enough
Terry Cooper - Still good enough to play for England when playing for the Boro

I can't say I've ever thought Chiellini better than very good. Though to be fair I don't watch much Italian football.

Maldini is a given

Beckenbaur isn't used as a watch word for imperious defending for no reason

Philipp Lahm is probably the best still playing (last time I checked)

Picking a slightly left field choice, Ledley King had he been blessed with a better fitness record would (IMO) be similarly regarded.

Lahm retired couple of years ago although he didn’t need to. He could still play now. He retired at the top of his game as he wanted too

I'd have had Cannavaro ahead of Chielleni, but it's conspicuous even on this short list how prominent the Italians are.

Always rated Stam too; looked like an old school stopper, but quick and could play the ball too.

Wouldn’t argue with that. But your thread was about great defenders. He was one and one I enjoyed to watch

The fact that he's a tw@t always tainted his performances as far as I'm concerned. That's the thing with football, things like that should be irrelevant, but somehow they are.

Chiellini is a bit of a **** aswell. Also no where near as good as John Terry was.

On the pitch yes, but that's allowed if he's on your team.

Off the pitch I don't recall him F***ing the wife of his team mate?
